Linux started in 1991 as a hobby project. Today it runs on 4 billion Android devices, all 500 of the world’s top supercomputers, and powers much of our daily lives.
The LF Research report on 35 years of Linux looks at how the kernel got there, including the review-driven collaboration behind it and the creation of Git.

To be fair the middle class has been being gutted in America since the 1980s. AI will definitely be an accelerant tho.

David Graeber comes to mind here. Bullshit Jobs definitely comes to mind here.
My thesis so far has been AI will eviscerate Graeber-ish Bullshit Jobs via automation, and amplify higher skilled labor.

Kathy Bates says she was sure she never thanked her mother in her Misery Oscar speech, then the interviewer showed her the tape
"She gave up her retirement because I was born so late in life to them."
"When I won the Oscar for Misery, she said, I don't know what all the excitement about, you didn't discover the cure for cancer."
"Why did I think I didn't thank her?"
"Because she should have had my life."
"I wanted her spirit to come into me and enjoy everything I was enjoying because of what she'd given up."
Her mom's whole review of the Oscar was that she didn't cure cancer, and Kathy still believed she had shorted her that night. Then she watches herself thank her mom at home, right there in the speech. Some people never stop trying to pay their parents back. You can hear it in how quiet she gets at the end.

I don't think the games are failing.
Their is a lack of future financing due to rising interest rates and inflation.
This is happening in Hollywood too hence a shift to film overseas to cut overhead.
All money is mysteriously going elsewhere...
