8am: Israel's vote is the "last chance" before becoming a pariah state.
9am: Syria banning women from university courses is "a bad omen."
One country is running a free election, the other is closing classrooms to women. Guess which one gets called a pariah.
Israel's vote today is "the last chance to preserve democracy and pull Israel back from the brink of becoming a pariah state under international sanctions." trib.al/boGxIVQ

For those who claim that criticising *Israel* is somehow “forbidden”, this is the President of La Liga making a grovelling apology to China because one of the League’s players made an offhand remark calling Mao a dictator (which is true!)
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Contexto importante: Mao Zedong fue efectivamente un dictador.

Understand how the narrative works.
Ahead of Brazil’s election, they were gearing up to blame Meta if Lula lost. Now that he’s been declared the winner, we’re hearing about the brilliant use of WhatsApp (Meta) that helped deliver his victory.
When Obama won in 2012, they celebrated his shrewd use of Facebook, voter data and microtargeting. When Brexit happened and Trump won in 2016, we got the Cambridge Analytica moral panic.
When the left wins, it’s brilliant digital campaigning. When the right wins, it’s social media manipulation undermining democracy.

I miss movie trailers when the narrator sounded like he was warning you about the movie.

This is obviously staggeringly ignorant but it's also downstream of a society where the word Zionist is increasingly used as an antisemitic placeholder for "bad Jews".
You couldn't think of a more perfect punchline for this than what's provided by clicking on her bio

What I find funny about this meme is how it escaped containment. The actual image lacks the context needed for the punchline. People just KNOW he did it, without having the slightest idea of what "it" is or how hot dogs are involved.

Walzer was a last holdout on the social democratic left who was willing to make it possible for the West to fight its enemies without being completely hamstrung by ethical and legal rules that essentially allow the enemy to win so long as defeating them harms "too many" civilians.
Even if one believed this saved civilians in the short-run, in the long-run it leads to the end of civilized society, as civilized countries can't fight, but barbarians, who don't care about any moral or legal rules, aren't constrained at all.

I don't like Ben Gvir or Smotrich. But they are moderates compared to your average Palestinian man walking in the streets of Gaza. They are not the obstacle to peace.
The anti Ben Gvir and Smotrich talking point is very common in the West under the theory that Israel would be embraced again if only the Israeli Right wing was sidelined. But that love would last only a few minutes, if that long.
The post October 7th reality is nearly ALL Israelis want leaders to stand strong against the threats that surround them and not make concessions that will endanger their security. Half the country may hate Bibi, but they frankly wouldn't change most of his military policies.
Naive thinking gave away Gaza and didn't see the ongoing threat of the Iranian backed militarized enemies in Israel's north and south. Going back to that place is suicidal, even if you think a few more members of Congress will then be less hostile to Israel.
Electing an Israeli Left wing government may feel good for some Americans, but it will never be enough to appease the growing hatred for Israel in the minds of college students and the media, poisoned by a decades long Qatari funded hate campaign.
I would love it if Israeli politicians were always diplomatic, but sometimes they have to be brutally honest. It may hurt our ears, but we don't suffer the same consequences that they do.
Israeli voters don't have the luxury of being wrong again about those who are determined to destroy their country and the Jews who live there. Picking olives is easy. Protecting Jews is much harder.
If we truly support the only democracy in the Middle East, we should let them elect their own government, and not pretend that these two guys are the real obstacle to peace, love and harmony.
As a non-American, I had a completely wrong image of The Cheesecake Factory aesthetics; from the name, I expected it to look like a classic diner, clean-cut, bright and functional.

istened to the Julian & Sandy sketch with “We’ve got a criminal practice that takes up most of our time” No laughs at first, Kenneth Horne says his next line, then there’s an incredible wave of astonished laughter as it sinks in.

Margaret Brundage signed her Weird Tales covers "M. Brundage," and in 1934 readers were still arguing in our letters column over whether the artist was a man. These are four of her October covers, from 1933 to 1938. #weirdtober
