New paper today estimates the per capita emissions gaps for 1.5C of global income groups in 2030, based on NDCs
Richest 1% set for footprints 30x 1.5C-aligned global level
Richest 10% - 9x higher
Middle 40% - 2x higher
Poorest 50% - 2x lower
@IEEP_eu @Oxfam @SEIclimate #COP26
As someone who has worked on similar methods with many others for some years , I think these latest #carbon #inequality estimates from @lucas_chancel are the best now available 👇
Excited to release this paper in @nature sustainability today!
Study: nature.com/articles/s41893-0…
Pre-print : lucaschancel.com/global-carb…
That said - it’s striking just how similar the big picture results are to those we have been talking about in recent years, using cruder methods
Richest 10% = c.50% global emissions, poorest 50% = c.10%, richest 1% alone = way more than poorest 50%
For the critics who still doubt the accuracy of these top down methods , this bottom up paper found an almost identical distribution earlier this year . nature.com/articles/s41893-0…
In late 2000s campaigners mocked-up newspaper front pages of the future, dominated by stories of climate crisis. Not even 20 years later
Many congratulations @yl_oswald - such important work, looking forward to seeing what comes next!

Overall positive👍but crucial AP5 (negotiating specific sust. FTA provisions) & 11 (civil society monitoring). @IEEP_eu, @elineblot.
5/ Use of #ETS2 revenues: EP wants 100% used for social climate action, incl 25% via SCF vs EC proposal for 25% via SCF + 25% matching funds from govts vs Council tbc!!
6/ End to sales of Internal Combustion Engine cars: EP wants 2035, like EC proposal vs Council tbc!!
These are the key issues to watch in the June Council meetings 👀 #Fitfor55

As inflation hits 9% can anyone see the wages spiral that began with all those massive pay settlements we didn't enjoy in the summer of 2021, or spot the impact of QE from 2009 onwards? No? That's because this inflation wasn't caused by them. 1/4

"This compromise still leaves too many companies benefiting from free permits to pollute for too long, but at least it would bring the end to these subsidies in sight. EU industry should build their competitiveness now on winning the race to net zero."

Another sign that progressives in the Parliament were right to say no deal is better than a bad deal last week - vital that champions in both institutions resist weak compromises if this is to be a decisive decade of climate action
A group of 10 EU countries warn the 27-nation bloc against watering down a massive climate and energy plan designed to align its economy with ambitious 2030 climate goals trib.al/MQneGZI
If this leak is right + plenary vote nxt week goes with a likely S&D/EPP/Renew compromise, we can expect for trilogues:
> Council wanting earlier intro of ETS2 in buildings/transport (2027 vs 2029)
Vs
> Parliament wanting earlier phase-out of ETS1 free allowances (2030? Vs 2035)
EU countries are considering a one-year delay to the launch of a new European #carbon market for buildings and transport, pushing back the start to 2027, as they seek a compromise on more ambitious climate policies, draft documents show #EUETS #EUGreenDeal reuters.com/world/europe/cou…

👉Previously showed SUVs = 2nd biggest driver of global emissions growth since 2010
👉Now: avoided emissions from every new electric car last year were cancelled out by purchases of SUVs instead of medium cars
