I still remember economists uniting as a profession against the $15 minimum wage. It went far beyond explaining likely tradeoffs--they acted like we needed their permission to try it
Economic populism also means dethroning economics. It’s not the job of economists to dictate how our economies should be run but to find solutions to implement democratically determined goals.

I've seen versions of this cope and they all ignore how many seats Dems started with. The "smart take" was that it would be hard for them to crack 230 bc they had so many swing seats already - Rs entered the cycle with just two members in districts won by Kamala. The biggest GOP House majority since the New Deal was the 2014 majority of 247 seats. Dems have already zoomed past that. And their big New Deal era majorities relied on Solid South conservatives who were replaced by Rs long ago. A majority of this size, where the most conservative member is Henry Cuellar (a pro-life Hispanic who's otherwise a normal liberal), is brand new.
Clinton lost 54 seats in the 1994 midterm election. Obama lost 63 seats in the 2010 midterm election. Trump just lost 41 seats in the 2026 midterm election. It’s not exactly the historic event you believe it to be.

A 🧵on the curious case of Americans electing Muslims to Congress - with comparisons to India and Pakistan. Only 1.5% of the US population is Muslim, yet Americans just elected 8 Muslims to the 535-member Congress - that's also 1.5% of all seats. This is somewhat of a puzzle. 1/6

Thank you, @jimsciutto, for continuing to report on the Rahimi twins in #Iran: Taraneh has been sentenced to death, and Romina, to 25 years - both, after protesting in January. @MasoudNour
21-year-old Iranian twins Taraneh and Romina Rahimi - one sentenced to death, the other to 25 years in prison for protesting their govt - have had their suit alleging torture and threats of rape dismissed and their lawyer jailed. The cousin who helped raise them tells me they now “look to the world to hear their voice.”

Terrible situation in #Paraguay where hundreds of thousands of people may have lost their savings and pensions following the private bank UENO Bank entered an insolvency process. Ueno Bank was the fifth-largest private bank in the country, with 2,941,996 customers as of June 2026 – nearly 60% of Paraguay's adult population – and it processed more than 3 million transactions daily. Two out of three electronic transactions at large retailers went through its accounts. On November 3, from one day to the next, everything shut down: the app, debit and credit cards, transfers, ATMs, and branches. Thousands of workers were unable to receive their pay, pay rent, buy food, or pay for college tuition.   Paraguay’s President has now resigned but this and his impeachment will not give people access to their savings or pensions.

Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong has been sentenced to 10 years in prison. The prominent Hong Kong activist pleaded guilty to conspiring to collude with foreign forces under the Beijing-imposed National Security Law (NSL). He was one of 45 opposition figures jailed for participating in unofficial “primaries” in 2020 - the largest mass prosecution under the NSL to date. UN experts have said the charges relate to activities protected under international human rights law. Hong Kong’s human rights situation has deteriorated dramatically since 2020, with more than 300 people arrested for violating the NSL or a colonial-era “sedition” law. In addition, the so-called Article 23 legislation introduced by the local authorities in 2024 has further deepened repression and silenced opposition voices in the city. No one should be jailed for peacefully exercising their rights. Authorities must release everyone detained solely for their political participation.

Prominent Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong has been sentenced to 10 more years in prison under the city’s national security law. Beijing imposed the law in 2020 in response to a major pro-democracy movement in the city, arresting hundreds of protesters. China says it’s necessary for stability but critics say the law is designed to suppress dissent and keep pro-democracy figures, like Wong, in prison. #News #Channel4News #C4News #HongKong #JoshuaWong #China #NI40

The scheming junior emperor declares his opposition to the senior Augustus over failed war in Persia. Classic gambit
One of the things the data analysts on our side obsessed over was "composition"—whether the electorate looked close enough to 2024 for Republicans to win. And despite polls that showed a Democrat blowout, the data kept on telling us the same story: in some states turnout was merely OK, in other states it was downright amazing, and in no state was it catastrophic. There was a genuine sense of optimism on our team: our people were showing up. So, I asked the smartest data guy I know, does that mean we're going to shock the world? "No," he told me. "We might do better than the polls suggest. But the data is telling us that a lot of Trump/Vance 2024 voters are pissed and planning to vote for the other guys. Our voters are turning out, but they may not vote for us." Well, that looks prophetic now. Our voters did show up. In Florida, for example, the electorate was 9 points more Republican than Democrat, just a couple points worse than 2024. Undoubtedly there were places we could have done better on turnout. But the main problem is not turnout. The main problem is that many people who voted for Trump/Vance in 2024 voted for Democrats in 2026. There will be a lot of infighting and arguing over what happened and why that is. One of the pollsters I really respect told me that our economic messaging wasn’t sharp enough down the stretch. I’m sure that’s true. But the real reason we lost is obvious to almost everyone. Another pollster—one of the smartest people I know in politics, told me yesterday we’d lose the generic ballot by 13 points. I felt negative going into Tuesday, but even I was shocked by this. In his polling, he saw that a lot of Trump 2024 voters were angry and planning to vote for Democrats. He asked those voters who had abandoned us what would cause them to come back on our team. The top four answers, accounting for nearly all of the responses were: 1) End the war 2) Focus on cost of living/inflation 3) Put America First 4) Change our relationship to Israel Our voters showed up. And the above four reasons are why many of them voted for Democrats. This is according to a pollster who nailed the results. While many spent Monday attacking Rachel Campos Duffy for calling for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict, it turns out her political advice was sound. (She’s also a great person.) In the next few months, there's going to be a lot of gaslighting. Expect to hear any number of establishment politicians say the solution to our woes is amnesty. I'm open to the idea that we should change enforcement—by focusing more on businesses that hire illegal labor, for instance. But anyone pushing amnesty is lying to you. The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night. If you'd like to argue it was worth it, that losing the Senate for the next 6 years was worth it, then do so. Argue it was a worthwhile cost to pay. Agree or disagree, that's at least honest. But everyone knows why we lost. And any honest conversation about where we go from here must start there. I remain hopeful about our country. To the people who are pissed off and want to say, “I told you so”: you’re right, you did tell us so. Take that energy into electing Republicans who share your worldview. To the people who are just pissed at the results, you should be. Let’s take that anger and get back to the work of saving our country.

Gadi Eisenkot reverses course and says he will break the election deadlock imposed by Jewish Israeli parties’ boycott of Israeli Arab parties. He will form government with the backing of the Arab Joint List. This would mark the end of Netanyahu as PM.
