In introductory undergraduate courses in linguistic anthropology, we learn to pay close attention to how completely baseless claims about language are often stated as fact to naturalize various societal hierarchies & norms.
"A lexicographer estimated that the average 19th-century peasant used a vocabulary of 250 words, an educated person 5,000, and Shakespeare 27,780, though that last number is disputed” (Max Hastings, The Times) Does that figure of 250 make origin of language seem less mysterious?

If you are at 4S, check out our panel at 11am CST, put together by @katherinebuse and @sampizelo, ft. Zach Yost, Will Lockett, Goetz Hoeppe, and yours truly. I will be talking about why we should consider scientific production today as a media franchise. #ESOCITE4S2022
My never-ending visa issues mean that I won't unfortunately be able to make it to Cholula for 4S. @katherinebuse and @sampizelo have planned a fantastic panel, and I am super sad to be missing out! Hope everyone has a great time at #ESOCITE4S22 and maybe we will meet in 2023.

Most researchers have never heard of this term or know what it means. We didn't when we first started building scite.

Raise your hand if you work in scholarly communication & have been using uncritically the term "ecosystem" fed by private publishers to disguise their enclosed "plantations". Then read this important article👇by @mariafarrell immediately! @InvestInOpen

There's always in these messages the idea that nothing educational happens during a strike - that solidarity is not learning, that refusing to compromise on dignity & justice is not educational, that being confronted with the decision of whether to cross the picket doesn't teach.
Replying to @TheNewSchool
But as we enter the fourth week of disruptions, we must use our resources carefully to ensure that our students’ academic needs are met.

I would just like to point out thar the uni presidents who are trying to bust the unions at Rutgers and the New School are both Black men who are scholars of James Baldwin. The NYU dean who tried to destroy my life was also a Black Baldwin scholar. This is no accident.
UPDATE ON THE NEW SCHOOL STRIKE The Provost who only 5 days ago wrote the whole university implicitly threatening undergraduates with academic punishment and signaling an intention to hire scab graders is now invoking bell hooks on the paradise of learning.

For the moment, The New School has achieved the perfect all-administrative university: a fancy cafeteria, dormitories, high tuition, zero pay for teachers and a fully staffed and highly paid executive administration.

I am happy to see @gatesfoundation support the reimagining of the @eLife model! It's important to applaud changes/experiments in publishing that address the issues plaguing the traditional publishing process - such using journal name as a proxy for impact.
In support of our new publishing model, 9 funders and research organisations are embracing reviewed preprints as an alternative way to assess researchers, and call on others to do the same. elifesciences.org/for-the-pr…
