This is a full Y8 scheme of work on the British Empire, based around @Sathnam’s Empireland. It’s been in the works since @historybookgrp’s discussion which inspired us to revisit how we approach the topic of empire. Resources shared here: cutt.ly/6NEb7BG
I’ve joined the trickle/flood/stampede over at BlueSky. Same username (@tommole).
I’ve not posted as much in the last year or so as Twitter has become so awful, so resolving that a new format will mean lots more sharing of resources and ideas. Please add if you’re there too!

Brilliant opportunity here for a new or experienced history teacher with a real passion for curriculum. I look forward to working closely with the new appointee. tes.com/jobs/vacancy/teacher…

A thread on how our dept. has started to teach climate history. First a big caveat that we are still developing it and it was the first year of teaching. As you can see the SOW has morphed and changed. Particularly after @VerityMorgan incredible session at @histassoc conf. 1/10
🧵 A thread (and resources) on a short enquiry built around the story of Nina Lugovskaya's diary, and what it reveals about the bigger picture - Stalin's control of the USSR. Thanks to @KatieAmery and @bones_carmel for bringing her story to my attention on @reteach_uk podcast.
I should link to the @reteach_uk podcast that I first heard this story on - a really fascinating episode that covers a whole range of curriculum stuff with @KatieAmery and @SPBeale.

This book by @geotayler is something else...
Luke is clearly someone who thinks VERY carefully about his craft & it is a pleasure to gain an insight into his thinking.
Not only do you get amazing diagrams, you get summaries on sequencing, CLT, etc, in the first 3 chapters!
A thread talking through our new scheme of work on abolition, beginning here with an intro to the TAST. Students learn about when and where the trade emerged, and analyse the role of different groups in the development of the trade. All resources here: shorturl.at/fjB45
Students make a Frayer model on strikes, then after watching the clip, arrange the key events of the strike in order. We then do some guided reading focusing on the unique relationship between President Lincoln and the Lancashire Mill Workers. I love how positive this story is!
Some context - we have one lesson a week and would love to develop this in more depth. This comes straight after our work on the Kingdom of Benin, and just before our unit on Empire (see below):
