I've felt for a while that the community aspect of fandom has been splintered but seeing how many people just want fic authors to shut up and write fic for them to passively consume without any communal reciprocity feels so so sad

when people say they want engagement I don't think most of them mean stats... they just mean they want to be a part of the conversation when you enjoy their works. you freak out about the ao3 outage, missing the fics. but the creators of the fics aren't allowed to miss you?

one thing the fan preservation aspect of this argument is overlooking (imo) is ao3 isn't gone forever (*knock on wood*) and these fics will be widely available in a month. while I think fan to fan sharing is fine acting like this is the only way to read these fics is not accurate

I'm curious if some of the rabid desire to "critique fanfic" comes from a loss/decline of other fan activities (like meta posts, rec lists etc.) that naturally led to more back and forth engagement between reader and writer?

Maybe this is overly generous but there's no denying that the community aspect of fandom had diminished over the years for a wide range of reasons and therefore there's fewer opportunities to meaningfully engage

I just keep scratching my head wondering WHY do people want to critique and I wonder if this is perhaps a poor way to explain what these people want when they say critique I'm sure there is a faction of bad actors as there always is but I'd be interested in hearing thoughts!
