We’re 6 months in, we have a really solid view now of what a DSA state will be: bike lanes and cops protecting Palestinian land sales. Public/private partnerships and homeless sweeps. AI in classrooms and pothole filling and lots and lots of instagram videos.

Communism by Del Close
If you are a communist, then you take the actual energy people have for whatever small victory and you relate it to a path forward for further political invention. The energy they have for the current moment has to be extended, not extinguished with "realism".

You need to be optimistic. But also not. But also optimistic. But also not. But also? Be optimistic. But don’t be optimistic. Are you being optimistic now? Uh uh uh- Simon didn’t say 😠

Hard to argue with someone who’s convinced themselves that workers <-> renters <-> consistent Dem voters

I hope DSA will heed this kind of hard nosed analysis like they did for defund
My advice to the "put trans kids in sports" side is to surrender. If you can't win in Washington, you can't win anywhere, and now you need to stop sandbagging the Democrats.

NEW PIECE: I comment on the election, in part by discussing some of my experience at Dialog 2024 and with... former Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll(!?). My main focus: Blame attribution drove the results of the election but blame fades.

Similarly as I start to dive in to reading more on Lenin, I’m struck by the idea of some that Lenin wouldn’t be able to suss out differences in both the political and economic situations of workers between turn of the century Tsarist Russia and 21st century America.
it’s funny to know that dsa supposedly reads Marx in their pe classes because I’m curious what part of “the working class cannot simply lay hold of the ready-made state machinery, and wield it for its own purposes” that ppl don’t understand as applying to electoral politics.

It’s a happy night but my primary emotion is still rage, especially at the corporate and institutional elites who rolled over for fascism two years ago. I don’t think we can move forward unless a significant number of people responsible for the last two years are in cages.

There are a handful of people who want to pull off this “I’m actually being optimistic AND pessimistic at the same time 😎 because I’m a REAL Marxist and a REAL organizer” and it’s like, pull your head out of your ass buddy.

The first election where people have betrayed their cultural values to vote with their pocketbooks in almost two years. Historical.
real communists understand this election was important bc people voted with their material conditions in mind instead of giving into whatever culture war bullshit the ruling class is pushing down their throat, and recognize this as an opportunity to build on class consciousness

Ok it’s time to hold Dems accountable and pressure them. How? Well ok we didn’t think about how for the past decade. Guess we could do some phonebanking. We like phonebanking. Maybe we just start phonebanking for aoc instead?? That feels more fun. Ok so let’s go,

A top down operation where the top is selected secretly? lol Love those democratic values 4 years of covering their ears under Biden. Showing you losing is fine (and promptly losing to Trump) . Did zero resisting during Trump2.0. No promises. Just waited for ppl to run back. Joy
AOC says she's not interested in running to be Speaker.

Ohh try? A mandate? Demand?
There is a very real, understandable impulse to just roll one's eyes and say "well Democrats aren't going to do anything anyway" but the stakes for human lives are just too high for that. I genuinely think total cynicism can be just as self-defeating as libbed out naïveté. This is a generational mandate for real change and we have to demand/require that our representatives actually do something with it

21 year old telling you about 2018.
We didn’t just elect a new bench of socialists to Congress, we elected socialists across local and state levels. This is not 2018 again, people don’t want to go back to the past, they want real change. That will be the #DSAdifference but only if we meet the political moment

it's wild that Biden was a major player in the genocide in Gaza yet people still differentiate him from hate mongers.
Replying to @DavidKlion
The big lesson of the Biden years is that you have to prosecute these people. You can’t just move on. You need to make the next generation of grifters and hate mongers scared for their lives.

These Social Democracy revivalists will name drop Gramsci but If you ask them to apply his pessimism of the intellect to their own projects they will start throwing a hissy fit and calling you a loser. Like I've watched neo socdem movements crash & burn all throughout the 2010s
They’re calling it “loser Leninism.” A self appointed vanguard whose aim is to convince working people good things aren’t possible, and workers are incapable of wielding power to force their representatives to serve their interests.

Thread below has some quotes from when I read the Ralph Miliband essay A State of De-Subordination, which imo is very good. I've thought for a while now that someone should write an essay trying to get at such periods as recurrent in capitalism. I'm currently reading a book by
"a multitude of academic and non-academic ideologues, overwhelmingly dominant in the field of what Marx called 'mental production' (...) assured the men of affairs and everyone else that crisis and conflict, at least on any serious and sustained scale, were things of the past"

When the reasonable, strategic, get shit done left is on year 20 of this kind of talk, what does that say about your reasonable, strategic, shit getting done?
The Democrats may have taken control of the House and the Senate, they may have humiliated Donald Trump and the Republican Party, but the real fight is only beginning. It is not simply a battle to hold the corrupt Trump regime to account, something that can only be done if the Democrats are willing overcome their reluctance to carry out impeachment proceedings against the president. It is also a battle to sweep away the corporate-indentured hierarchy of the Democratic Party, including Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries. The Democratic Party since the presidency of Bill Clinton, who gave us the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the greatest betrayal of the working class since the 1947 Taft-Hartley Act, and gutted New Deal-era welfare programs such as the Aid to Families with Dependent Children, is a more polished version of corporate and oligarchic rule, abjectly subservient to the war machine, the Israel lobby and their funders in the billionaire class. The country is broken. Corruption, in both parties, is endemic. Federal agencies have been hollowed out and destroyed. The courts, including the Supreme Court, have been handed over to right-wing ideologues. The working class is crippled with debt peonage and substandard wages. Constitutional norms and protections have been erased. Billionaires, including Trump, pay little to no income tax. The 2010 Citizens United Supreme Court ruling, which allows big business to fund their hand-picked candidates, sustains a system of legalized bribery. The public may clamor for a raise in the minimum wage, Medicare for All, regulation of the big banks and private equity firms, an end to arms shipments to Israel and campaign finance reform, but no one in the leadership of the Democratic Party listens or cares. They serve their paymasters. Will cutthroat capitalism, sold to us under the sanitized name of neoliberalism, be allowed to continue to impoverish the citizenry and funnel wealth upwards into the hands of the 1 percent? Will corporations be regulated and policed? Will corporate criminals be brought to trial? Will our democracy be restored? Or will the grotesque sight of a trillionaire, Elon Musk, gutting federal agencies and pouring hundreds of millions into elections to try and control the outcome be normalized? The handful of politicians who attempt to confront the corruption and the devastation visited on the American working class through deindustrialization and deregulation, such as Bernie Sanders, see their campaigns sabotaged by the Democratic Party leadership, including Barack Obama. We must demand that progressive candidates, including Michigan senator-elect Abdul El-Sayed and Maine’s Troy Jackson, build coalitions to oust the Democratic Party leadership, raise the minimum wage, enact universal health care, prosecute corporate crime and impeach Trump. It will be up to us. The Democratic Party hierarchy will see the results not as a repudiation of Trump, but an endorsement of the flaccid and ineffectual position of a party that stands for little and fights for less. This would be yet another betrayal by the Democrats of voters. It would keep alive the very real prospect of another fascist, one better organized and more intelligent, taking the White House in two years. Of course, this fight will mean not only jettisoning a corrupt Democratic Party leadership, but turning on the mega-donors, lobbyists and corporations that fund and control the Democratic Party. The effort to wrest the party back from the hands of corporations and oligarchs will be vicious and difficult. It will require us to rely on the power of mass movements to sever these bonds. Nothing else will work. If we fail, our anemic democracy will not be saved by these midterm elections, but doomed.
