Bring it to a vote, @JulieMenin — or you're standing with billionaires over workers.
Since its reintroduction in April, the Delivery Protection Act has supermajority support in the New York City Council. Mayor Zohran Mamdani has committed to signing this critical legislation once passed. The only thing preventing New York City from making labor history? Council Speaker Julie Menin, who has failed to schedule this landmark bill for a vote. Speaker Menin, it’s time to choose: Do you stand with every day New Yorkers who support the DPA, or with Amazon and other companies who endanger workers and the communities they deliver to? Schedule the vote for the Delivery Protection Act and let the people of New York City have their say.

gonna be honest, i find the entire nithya debacle extremely frustrating and i don’t think any side comes out of it looking good. DSA-LA failed, yes but the NPC is also failing. for all this to end with demanding raman meet 3 days before the election is embarrassing.

raman has been the topic of discourse for MONTHS. how has neither DSA-LA nor the NPC been able to resolve this until literal days before the election. even if you support an unendorsement, at that point it won’t even do anything. i just don’t get how we’ve reached this point.

all of this makes it that much more infuriating that the Biden admin refused to lift a finger to meaningfully hold accountable Trump/his cronies for staging a literal insurrection + countless other crimes

Regardless of which war criminal becomes prime minister, Palestinians living under Israeli apartheid will continue to face genocide, land theft, and erasure. We cannot accept lies, excuses, or half-measures from our leaders. We must impose a full arms embargo and sanctions until Palestine is free.

NEW: DSA's National Political Committee passed two resolutions tonight regarding Los Angeles mayoral candidate Nithya Raman, setting up processes to potentially force DSA's Los Angeles chapter to rescind its endorsement of her campaign and/or expel her from DSA. can someone explain to me why the NPC didn’t just send nithya these two questions? this entire situation is so maddening. why aren’t we able to get clear, simple answers from her at any point in this process? it can’t be so hard
The 2026 NYC-DSA questionnaire asks the following two questions about BDS. It doesn't ask how a candidate would implement BDS as policy in office. 1. New York State has taken unconstitutional actions targeting the rights of individuals and organizations that participate in the nonviolent Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement. Will you oppose any attempts to limit the right to engage in nonviolent protest? 2. 5. Do you support the Palestinian call for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) to pressure Israel until it complies with international law by ending the occupation, instituting equal rights for its Palestinian citizens and respecting Palestinian refugees’ right to return? If not, please explain why.

this is more of the same. we don’t want to know what nithya thinks ā€œworking class angelenosā€ should do, we want to know what she, the future mayor of LA, supports *as a matter of policy*. it’s great she’ll support people’s right to protest, but divestment is policy not a protest.
Replying to @petersterne
Los Angeles mayoral candidate Nithya Raman sent the following statement to DSA-LA explaining her position on BDS, which in turn was shared with DSA's National Political Committee: Over the last couple of years, I have come to believe strongly that Israel is committing a genocide in Gaza, and I have felt deeply uncomfortable with US tax dollars funding this atrocity. In November 2023, I was the first councilmember to recognize the lives lost in Palestine by adjourning a council meeting in honor of those killed in Gaza. Several months later, I called for an investigation into LAPD's violent response to the encampments and protests at USC and UCLA, noting that it is "incumbent upon the City to be transparent and accountable to Angelenos about how their safety and civil rights are being protected, and for that protection to be equally provided regardless of one's politics, identity and protected free speech." And in June 2024, I co-authored the Los Angeles ceasefire resolution to ask that "the City joins the call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, the immediate and unconditional return of all hostages, and the safe and immediate passage of unhindered humanitarian aid and medical care to Gaza; and ... that the City will not tolerate any form of harmful and racist language, especially antisemitic, anti-Palestinian, and Islamophobic hate speech toward anyone; and ... that the City supports peaceful diplomacy and an end to the conflict that honors all peoples' right to dignity, safety, and justice." I believe the best way for working Angelenos to stand in solidarity with Gaza is through non-violent protest, legislative action, and diplomatic pressure, including BDS. As mayor, I will continue to protect the right of all people to engage in peaceful protests and would continue to oppose any policy or city legislation imposing penalties on the constitutional right to protest against or criticize any nation. Generations of Angelenos do not want their tax dollars to go toward endless wars when they are struggling to make rent, find housing, afford healthcare, and find stable work.

something i’m hoping to build support for leading up to convention is the proposal to remove steering from CLC. there’s no reason why the ā€œexecutiveā€ should also be part of the ā€œlegislative.ā€ and since steering isn’t elected proportionally, adding them makes CLC not proportional.

steering should serve as non-voting members of CLC by default. if they want to be voting members, they should have to run for CLC like anyone else and occupy one of the seats their tendency is proportionally allocated. if we care about proportional representation, let’s fix this!

i really think this is a no brainer improvement to chapter democracy. the only reason it stays the way it’s been is because it artificially inflates the power of the SMC/GW majority on CLC and they don’t want to change what benefits them lol.

Haley Steven’s: DONT UNFAIRLY DEMONIZE ISRAEL Israelis:
This type of fearmongering about Israel is wrong. It is not a winning strategy for any state. It does nothing to help Michigan Democrats win up and down the ballot in eight days. Do we need to lower costs by building more homes, securing people’s health care, and creating a fairer federal tax code? Yes, we do!! How we do so is not by blaming the high costs of our goods on the only Jewish homeland in the world. I want to see Democrats succeed at every level, and that means keeping our focus on lowering costs for Michigan families and reining in this out-of-control President.

āš”ļø Mayor Zohran Mamdani's NYPD is poised to sign a three-year, $750,500 no-bid contract with Israeli surveillance firm Cognyte for FalcoNet, an AI-driven device that mimics a cell tower to track phones and can be mounted on police cars and drones or hidden in a backpack, the New York Daily News reported. Cognyte won a tender to sell intercept spyware to Myanmar's state telecom weeks before the 2021 military coup, Reuters previously reported. Meta banned the firm the same year, saying its customers used fake accounts to target journalists and politicians in Kenya, Mexico and Indonesia. The firm is part of an Israeli surveillance industry that grew big as a result of the military's monitoring of Palestinians, whose phone calls Israel's Unit 8200 has intercepted and stored by the millions, including to carry out genocide in Gaza and enforce a brutal illegal occupation in Jerusalem and the West Bank.
