Another example of colourism in the music industry because what exactly does Caresha have for JT to be jealous of?
Jason Lee puts Yung Miami on the spot, asking if she misses JT. She responds, saying the situation is what it is and she’s moving forward. She adds that she’s willing to forgive JT and talk about everything. Jason Lee then tells Yung Miami that the split with JT is driven by jealousy because Yung Miami had the bigger high profile relationship, kids, and she’s very well put together.
“It almost seems like everything is driven by jealousy, you had the bigger high profile relationship, you have to beautiful children, you’re very well put together, you have genuine happiness. What i pray is that if for whatever your God tells you to comeback together that it comes back together out of love and mutual respect and not desperation”
In April 2001, Mariah Carey signed the most expensive record deal in pop history.
Virgin Records agreed to pay her $100 million for five albums.
She was leaving Sony after a divorce from Tommy Mottola, the head of the label, and she wanted freedom, control, and a fresh start. The music industry called it the contract of the decade. Mariah thought she had finally won.
Five months later, everything began to fall apart.
On September 11, 2001, Carey released the Glitter album. The companion film followed weeks later. But the release landed in the worst possible moment.
The attacks hit America. The country was not listening to pop. The album stalled. The film earned only a few million dollars against a $22 million budget. Critics tore it apart.
Before the release, Carey had already started to break. In July 2001, after a public appearance on MTV that frightened fans, she was hospitalized for extreme exhaustion.
In her 2002 NBC Dateline interview below, Carey reflects on the grueling corporate pressure, explaining how the label's non-stop demands left no room for her to set personal boundaries or recover.
The industry that had toasted her $100 million contract turned its back. Radio ignored her. Press coverage turned cruel. The story was no longer about a star at her peak. It was about a woman falling apart on camera while the world watched.
In January 2002, Virgin and Carey ended the deal. Virgin paid her roughly $28 million to walk away. She had delivered no hits. She had made one film nobody remembered. And she left with a check larger than most artists earn in a lifetime.
The industry had written her off. It was wrong.
Carey signed with Island Records, disappeared from the spotlight to recover, and in 2005 returned with The Emancipation of Mimi.
The album sold over 10 million copies worldwide and produced the biggest single of the year in the United States. The singer the industry had buried was, once again, standing at the top.
