I joined @GoogleDeepMind to develop a research program on the economics of AGI. Today, together with Andrew Koh (@andrewjkoh) and Shane Legg (@ShaneLegg), we are incredibly excited to release The Economics of Intelligence, the first in a series of projects from our group on how AGI will change the economy.
How do capability improvements transform the economy, and when? In this project, we define thresholds of economic capabilities, e.g., minimal AGI, based on how they transform the economy. We then track how the economy–market structure, employment, and wages–changes during the transition across capability regimes.
We have seen exponential increases in what AI agents can do but the broader economy seems almost remarkably unchanged. Part of the reason is that the solo AI agent is the wrong economic object; economic transformation is an equilibrium outcome where organizations compete. Looking at how intelligence functions within organizations, transformation will depend on when two key capability thresholds are crossed: competence (gains on individual skills, e.g., coding, math) and coordination (gains on ability of agents to cooperate and work together).
We show that what economic transformation looks like depends on whether AI becomes supercompetent, supercooperative, or both—the regime of artificial superintelligence (ASI). Tracking this transition shows why the real visible transformation may come from improvements in coordination—a capability most benchmarks don’t yet track. Past a certain threshold, AI capabilities can break the Coasian ceiling on firm size and lead to an economy that looks drastically different than the one we see today.
Two main takeaways:
1. To understand the path of transformation, we should be tracking agentic coordination more closely.
2. The impact of AI will likely show up in wages before market structure or employment.
We are really excited about this paper. Excited to hear people’s thoughts.

HTX is no longer active in the UK. UK users should visit its website for information about the availability of its services and arrangements for withdrawing any residual assets.

Scoop: Voters in Iowa, Ohio want AI safety measures, even at the expense of falling behind the AI race, support things like increased parental controls for AI, bans on chatbots for minors, and government AI safety testing, Republican pollster finds
In response, WH tells me: “American leadership in super intelligence is essential for our national security, economic prosperity, and the quality of life of the American people. President Trump is committed to ensuring America continues to lead the world in super intelligence while protecting American consumers.”

The regulator said that current facial age checks used widely by the social media platforms were not accurate enough to confirm whether a child was over 16⤵️

Breaking: Michael Burry says Anthropic's IPO filing shows the whole AI boom is "catastrophically vulnerable"
Below are his reasonings:
1. Anthropic owes $537B for computer power, and pending deals could push it to $800B
2. Anthropic brings in about $65B a year, so it owes about 12x what it makes
3. Half of $537B goes to $AMZN, $GOOGL and $MSFT
4. Anthropic's sales growth slowed from 144% last quarter to 46% this quarter, while its compute costs jumped 78%
Burry says this setup works while AI keeps growing, but one slowdown could hit cause a collapse

“Industry groups” reminds me of this Google executive testimony unsealed earlier this week. Good time, bad time?
How about Meta first withdraws its egregious proposed terms, THEN meets with interested parties to explain what it's legally trying to accomplish.
Asking for some friends.
We've heard publishers' feedback on our proposed ads and business terms update. We care deeply about our partners and do not plan to make policy changes without a full consultation with industry groups and leaders.
We're committed to getting this right, and as we expect this consultation could extend beyond November 20, in which case we’d delay implementation of the updated terms. Until then our existing terms remain in place.

The UK government has announced that the National Living Wage (ie legal minimum wage for workers aged 21+) will rise to £13.21 from April or €15.78 per hour. This applies to Northern Ireland as well. Ireland (the South) generally makes up for a higher cost of living with higher salaries. Not so for the lowest paid ☹️

Quite a strange quarter for Alphabet $GOOGL: advertising growth was weak across the board, with Search at +12% (vs. +17% last quarter) and YouTube at +9% (vs. +13% last quarter).
And notably, the Network business grew for the first time since Q2 2022.
The company mentioned that its Search query growth rate was "the highest it has been in the last five years."

Delaware's draft AI Company Act is the most interesting piece of AI legislation this year. Rather than asking what AI is allowed to do, it asks who pays when things go wrong and who pays when things go wrong. If an AI agent runs the company and a corporate member owns it, the liability shield will only hold if the entity is adequately capitalised.
In the EU, we have risk tiers, conformity assessments and gatekeeper lists. The DMA still prevents Siri AI from being available on EU iPhones. Europe regulates technology before it even exists. In contrast, the Delaware draft prices the risk and lets the market discover the rest. This is the jurisdictional competition that shaped US corporate law. Capital follows rules that can be priced. Guess where the first autonomous companies will be incorporated. Argentina or the US? (Certainly not in Europe.)

Reducing friction Google and Stripe. The former head of Google payments said “Tom payments are a money losing biz for us, we don’t make a dime in places like India where we are #2 enabler of UPI, or even in GPay. Google wins when we take the friction out of commerce”. With Stripe Pay, Tempo, …I’m now convinced stripe is taking the friction out of payments (and will win).
The logical question is “will this impact cards”? I don’t think so as they are core to Stripe’s economics w strong preference on both consumer and bank side. Stablecoin competes w debit (not credit) and merchants are not planning on consumer stablecoin acceptance
But…. Stripe will make huge strides where this preference does not exist both at the low win in X402/MPP and in Enterprise/B2B in Stripe Pay. Commercial banking, payment and treasury revenue streams will undergo massive change in the next 1-2 yrs.

This is one of the most important pieces of social science on human and AI interaction that I’ve seen in some time. Experts follow agentic advice the vast majority of the time (causally), but only a tiny fraction credit the agent—majority think they came to decision on their own volition.
Reminds me of the classic Nisbett and Wilson study on people following outside influence without realizing it
“ But as more work is handed to AI—including AI safety research—these judgment calls are the main levers for people's own values to influence outcomes.
If people defer to AI without noticing, then "human in the loop" might provide less assurance than people expect.”
