need to reiterate sooo bad that downloading fics is NOT the problem - it's great! the issue is reuploading people's work to public sites. if ao3 was still up and someone took your fic and reposted the entire thing under their username, you absolutely would not be happy about it.

what i can't figure out about fanfic engagement discourse is why so many of you are so dead set on not showing any appreciation for the stories you spend your time reading. you don't feel a smidge of gratitude? you don't feel even a hint of the need to share your thanks?

ao3 is down. everyone's sad about it. discourse over work ownership and appreciation. instead of seeing readers (who have been increasingly entitled for years already) go "i'll do better", i am seeing a lot of writers go idw to upload anymore / i'm deleting everything.

most fic writers donβt want engagement to βget famousβ or anything. itβs just that when you put your heart into something, it feels good to know people liked and enjoyed it. it also helps motivation to write more. if you ignore fic writers, there wonβt be any more fics to readπ€·ββοΈ

fanartists can do commissions, set up shops selling products with other people's characters, put "don't repost" on every piece of fanart they put out, but if a fic writer asks to not be reposted or (god forbid) asks for kudos/comments yall will take them out back and shoot them

I think we've gotten far too comfortable treating cruelty as some kind of personality trait. why is your response to seeing something you dislike the desire to humiliate the person who made it? why does your dislike of something need to become somebody else's punishment?
