Finchley Road Station, London, 1910. A wonderful glimpse of Edwardian London, with a horse-drawn vehicle waiting outside and a huge sign advertising trains to the Japan–British Exhibition at White City. The station had opened in 1879 and was still part of the Metropolitan Railway. Just four years after this photograph, the frontage would be rebuilt, making this a lovely record of the old station before it disappeared. #LondonHistory #FinchleyRoad

The left should look at this stuff in the same way that Thatcher reflected on Blair: “We forced our opponents to change their minds." The argument on public ownership for rail, mail, water and energy, has never been stronger.
Royal Mail should be back in public hands. After years of missed delivery targets, Royal Mail has proven it can’t be run effectively by the private sector. That’s why I’ve called on the Government to renationalise it. If we fail to act, we risk losing Royal Mail for good.

Stop the stealth tax!!! 1 in 6 pensioners survive on the State Pension alone. This year, many will be dragged into paying taxes on this tiny amount of money. The suggestion that tax brackets might be altered in this week’s budget to help these low income pensioners is welcome. But tax brackets have been static since 2022, with more of us pulled into paying more tax on stagnant wages. And this government are already threatening to take £1500 a year from pensioners through triple lock cuts. We need to stop tinkering around the edges - increase tax thresholds for all, leave pensioners alone, and start taxing those who can afford it. #WealthTax #StealthTax #StatePension

Well, well, well... 80% of "donations" to Nigel Farage’s party are from donors or companies based overseas. This is not normal. And the public deserves to know what these super-rich donors want back in return.

This is brilliant. It resembles the sortition process used by Athens to select decision makers. It is far superior to the narcissism and money dominated popularity contests we currently call democracy.

“Having a high-speed line is now seen as a requirement of twenty-first-century nationhood. With cars being problematic in so many ways, high-speed trains seem to have been blessed with good great fortune: they are beautiful, fast, elegant, modern and environmentally friendlier."

The Two Women Who Cracked the Abwehr Enigma: How Mavis Batey and Margaret Rock Helped Secure D-Day (a long-form post) Ahead of D-Day, Mavis Batey and Margaret Rock played a leading role in cracking the complex Enigma code of the Abwehr, the German Secret Service. Unlike other machines it had four rotors instead of the standard three, and they rotated randomly, with no predictable pattern. Hut 6 had been unable to break it. On 8 December 1941 Mavis Batey broke a message on the link between Belgrade and Berlin, allowing the reconstruction of one of the rotors. Within days Knox and his team had broken into the Abwehr Enigma, and shortly afterwards Mavis broke a second Abwehr machine. The significance of their work cannot be overestimated. MI5 and MI6 were running double agents as part of the ‘Double Cross System’ and feeding deception and fake intelligence to the Germans. Being able to decode the messages between the Abwehr and their agents ensured that the double agents were really working for the Allies. It also provided a way to monitor whether the Germans had accepted the deception. It ensured the success of the D-Day landings because the Double Cross agents fed information to the Germans that the invasion was to occur at Pas de Calais and not at the real landing points in Normandy. Brigadier Bill Williams, Montgomery’s chief intelligence officer, said that without cracking the Abwehr Enigma, the deception operation could not have been mounted as the Germans would have moved their reinforcements from Calais to Normandy. The successes of D-Day would have had a very different outcome. (end).

I wrote about Burnham’s first 100 days, Mao’s mass line, & ‘consultative Leninism’. We are now seeing a PM who leans into left populism, without having much time for members driving policy. That’s new. Centralisation plus input from below, seems an interesting mix….. unherd.com/2026/10/chairman-…

A short film showing traffic on Blackfriars Bridge in July 1896. Pioneering filmmaker Robert W. Paul positioned his camera at the southern end of the bridge, looking north towards the City of London. Beyond lay Fleet Street and St Paul’s, while steam trains (unfortunately not seen here) crossed the neighbouring railway bridge. A wonderful glimpse of ordinary Londoners going about their lives 130 years ago. #VictorianLondon #1890s #VictorianBritain

Almost 1 km of Oxford Street is now pedestrianised. Trees, seats and plazas are planned for spring 2027. More room for public life, lingering and chilling. Not just shopping. The real test: an inclusive street that works for visitors and neighbours alike.
