Japan has vending machines that do something no other country thought of. When a major earthquake hits, they switch themselves to free. One remote signal from the operator, and thousands of machines across the disaster zone start giving away every drink inside. Water, tea, juice. Push a button, it's yours. They're called disaster-relief vending machines. There are hundreds of thousands of them, quietly standing on street corners, marked and mapped, waiting for the worst day. Some have built-in message boards for evacuation info. Some have batteries to keep working through blackouts. Think about the design philosophy for a second. A vending machine exists to take money. Japan looked at it and asked: "What should this machine do on the day money stops mattering?" And then they built the answer. In advance. By the hundreds of thousands. This is the country where nobody looted after the 2011 tsunami. People stood in line. In the rubble. Quietly. Turns out even the machines were designed with the same instinct: when everything falls apart, take care of each other first. Even the robots here have manners.
