2 months ago, we brought GoLemon’s operations to a close. There’s a lot from those 30 months to write about, so I’m starting with an essay about org charts, the shape of our Growth team & how the work kept changing the team we thought we needed 👉🏾 uberjj.substack.com/p/the-or… 💚✨

Apart from Asake & Murtala Ramat Muhammed, are there any other popular Nigerian men with female names?

Six years later, not much has changed. Same government, same playbook of fear and intimidation. Today, right here at the Lekki Toll Gate, citizens gathered peacefully to honor the lives lost six years ago during EndSARS. And how did the authorities respond? By firing tear gas at us. Let that sink in. Six years after a generation cried out for basic dignity, safety, and accountability in policing, a peaceful memorial is still met with an unprovoked tear gas attack? The message is loud and clear, they are still terrified of remembrance, they are still terrified of accountability, and they are still terrified of YOU speaking up. Expressing grief and sympathy is not a crime. Peaceful assembly and solemn reflection should not be met with state brutality and repression. Effective governance is not about silencing the streets. It is about building a system that listens, that protects, that includes and that provides for everyone. To every young person and resident carrying the vision of a better Lagos, never forget that your voice is powerful, that your vote carries your voice and that the ballot is the vehicle through which you can speak loudest and change the story. We remember, We rise. FD Ó Ti Yá. #EndSARS #Lagos #FunsoDoherty #OTiYa #NDC

The National Theatre was built in 1976. Recently, it's been beautifully renovated and home to several outstanding events and concerts. We get to enjoy this because the original design was intentionally grand, world-class, and built to inspire wonder. 50 years gone; and in 200, it'll still be a superb location. One wonders: how many structures built in the past 50 years can make this boast?

I think the divide over this ad boils down to aspiration vs. realism. Apple ads typically appeal to our aspirational selves: "this isn’t me today, but I hope it is tomorrow." With HomeView, Apple seems to be switching it up to: “wow, I feel seen.” And the execution almost feels like a Safdie brothers' production. Frantic pacing, overlapping convos, and the exaggerated chaos of everyday family life. Both approaches can work imo, but we’ve become so accustomed to Apple selling us the aspirational version of our lives that seeing it reflect our actual reality feels somewhat jarring.
Why I think the Homeview launch commercial was the weirdest I've seen from Apple in a long time Full podcast episode: youtu.be/VwD3D2lgIWU?si=FP52…

HTC HD2 It's the most moddable device I ever owned. Came with Windows Mobile, and then I loaded Firefox, Ubuntu, and two flavors of Android on it. Super fun device ✨
Name an Android phone that was SO good you still think about it today. Bonus points if you still own it.🥹

I've seen harmful religious indoctrination in many Nigerian universities on both sides. In some sense, that should be expected if one considers unis a microcosm of society, but it's worrying nonetheless.

Love that so many of my friends sent me Kunle Afolayan's home. It's been one of my fave residential buildings in Naij for a while now. Tastefully designed, functional, and with lots of air and light👌🏾

The main reason I'm still on Twitter is fomo. I feel like I could wake up one day and learn that they're using AI agents to make peppery ponmo, and you can now teleport with Claude Danfo v4.0 Every 2 seconds: "we're excited to announce..."

I know Hanie is being tongue-in-cheek, but this is how the Ivorian writer, Ahmadou Kourouma, would write sometimes 😂 He'd deliberately retain Malinke's syntax, but write in French. Also reminds me of Achebe's "Let no one be fooled by the fact that we may write in English, for we intend to do unheard of things with it."
One way doesn’t enter market

American spelling is efficient and economical. It doesn't carry the baggage of history and lineage that British English lugs around. Still, I have a bias for BrE, but that's just a function of my education.

One of my favourite observations is that people are people. Yet, so often, you find someone point their finger and go "look, it's the people from that other tribe". But wait two business days, and there's someone from their own tribe perpetrating the same offence.

Ilorin had a booming textile industry as far back as 1800. It then evolved to be one of the major centres for the manufacture + trade of aṣọ òkè in Yorubaland. Sányán, one of the three main forms of aṣọ òkè was, and still is, treasured in Ilorin. It’s the brown + white ofi you sometimes see at weddings and ceremonies. The silk from authentic sányán comes from the cocoons of Anaphe caterpillars. But overharvesting of the trees they depend on means authentic sányán may soon become a thing of the past. This piece (h/t @hey_sesan) looks at aṣọ òkè from a different and interesting angle ✨ guzangs.com/aso-oke-the-clot…

The Anaphe caterpillars are also particularly wild, so there hasn't been much success farming then commercially. It's also the reason why authentic sányán is so expensive.
