When Chris Tomlin discovered the earliest known Christian hymn, one thing stunned him: the first worship song we have “has nothing to do about us” and is all about the glory of God. He explains why that changes how we think about modern worship and the songs we sing in church today.

My friend @johnpauldickson recently filmed and produced a fascinating documentary on one of the earliest hymns ever discovered! Pulled from the sands of Egypt's Oxyrhynchus, this papyrus scrap containing the earliest known Christian hymn (complete with both its lyrics and musical notation) is put to music again nearly 2 millennia later. The debut of the film happens world-wide March 24-26. Check it out!

The great German theologian and anti-Nazi activist Dietrich Bonhoeffer is one of those figures people try to co-opt for their own social agenda, whether 'progressive' or 'conservative'. This is so sad, because the man is utterly fascinating on his own terms. I admit, I got to the end of making this episode - the first of our new @undeceptions season - and I still don't know quite what to make of Bonhoeffer. Good history must exist, if for no other reason, because bad history needs to be answered. We have entered an “ahistoric age”, my guest Dr Sarah Irving-Stonebraker tells us, in which we are nearly incapable of speaking meaningfully about the past, except perhaps as part of the “culture wars.” Commentators today (and some professional historians) use historical stories to score moral or political points, whether about sex, science, racism, religion, nationalism, the West, or whatever. Some of this is valid. A great deal of it is selective and wrong. Good history will offer clarity and correction. It will refuse to wield factoids as weapons of war. It will invite the voices of the past to speak for themselves, as if at their own trial. Sometimes we—the modern jury—will certainly find our ancestors guilty as charged. Other times, they will prove us guilty of slander and evidence-tampering. @undeceptions
