What is it really like working for an MP? And are conditions getting better or worse?
Former parliamentary union rep @maxiefreedman gives us the inside story.

After fifteen years I am no longer Chair of @unitepsbranch, the union branch representing staff of MPs and Lords from all parties in parliament and in constituency offices.
Please forgive me a bit of self-indulgence to detail some of the achievements we have made in that time.

And so Bone lost the seat not only for himself but for his girlfriend and his party.
The consequences of bullying your staff are now clear and real.
MPs take note.

A truly significant moment.
For the first time an MP has lost their seat predominantly due to bullying staff.
I hope others take note and recognise that their behaviour may now have severe consequences.

All of this!
Although Congress also has a culture of unpaid internships that we have worked hard to (mostly) eliminate in Westminster.

Maximum pay for a UK parliamentary staff member is £53k ($64k). In the US, it's $212k (£175k)!
MPs' offices are woefully under-resourced.

Parliament's latest food hygiene report, obtained under FOI, shows that mouse droppings were found in Debate, Brasserie, Bellamy's, Banqueting, Terrace Cafeteria & the Members Dining kitchen.
It scored 2 out of a possible 5 from Westminster Council for complying with food law.

Unite Parliamentary Staff Branch conducted our largest ever survey of MPs staff over the summer to provide evidence to @CommonsSpeaker who is reviewing employment structures
Today we want to release some of our findings to the public

Congratulations to John, who is a lovely man and a real friend of MPs’ staff- it was thanks to his support that @unitepsbranch gained recognition from the PLP!
This week we celebrated @JohnCryerMP being the longest serving Chair of the Parliamentary Labour Party in all its history. Could not be prouder of him and every thing he has done for @UKLabour

With this giggling attitude of a former Whip to allegations of sexual assault and rape, no wonder progress to make Parliament a safe workplace has been such a struggle.

I’ve been a trade union member for 25yrs - since my very first week of work in 1997 - and have always appreciated having someone in my corner.
The lengths some bosses go to trying to discourage workers from joining is proof it’s a good idea. #HeartUnions tuc.org.uk/join-a-union

With all the challenges that come from working for an MP, at least we get to call them by their name. Having to address your boss as “Senator” is even more appallingly hierarchical and deferential than the stuffiest elements of the Commons!

Every morning around 830a, Manchin gets a text from a staffer on what the national debt is (photo below).
Dems have discussed putting a chunk of revenues/savings to deficit reduction as an enticement.
I asked him about that.

Indeed - not sure about ethics of this at all... We are receiving record levels of inquiries and requests for assistance and my team and I do very best to respond to as quickly as can but it’s a struggle. We don’t need “mystery shoppers” on top.

At a time when staff in all MPs' offices are working so hard to process record levels of correspondence and help those who've been devastated by this pandemic, it's disgraceful that @KingsCollegeLon and @LSEnews created fake casework for a study.
They should apologise.
Parliamentary Staff Branch retweeted
If this is true, regrettably, in future I will be very reluctant to respond to any “surveys” from students or those undertaking research which is a shame if universities such as @KingsCollegeLon & @LSEnews are behaving in this way. Collateral damage.

For people to fake being constituents & take up time that MP teams could be using to help constituents in need is absolutely awful. I know from my own experience; my team work all hours to help constituents. They should not be treat as guinea pigs.

What ethics committee signed off such a project during a pandemic when MPs offices already overloaded? @Kingspol_econ @KingsCollegeLon this very poor research decision and hope you will respond to the concerns presented!

THREAD: While I’m still annoyed at the unethical nature of the @KingsCollegeLon fake casework research that MPs’ and staff were unwitting lab rats for, this isn’t the only aspect of this issue that concerns me. 1/10
