Big reason that bullies thrive in academia is that they are the enforcers of mediocrity. Academics are very insecure and they hate it when they see others trying to be something more than mediocre, so they love seeing people who have real intellectual ambitions put in their place

Some jerks submitted over 150 reports to my favorite bug bounty program in one day and they paused the program. Will likely lower future rewards. This is why we can't have nice things. 😭 Out of loyalty I'll still submit via email for no reward.

In highschool, there's a skill check you have to pass where procrastinating turns into "Eh I just won't do it just this once" and I kid you not if you fail that skill check it WILL ruin your life forever

In the final years of his life, Ernest Hemingway tried to convince friends and family that the FBI was following him, but they just told him he was paranoid. In late 1960, he was admitted to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, where he received electroshock therapy. Even there, he refused to speak freely, convinced someone was listening. In July 1961, Hemingway died by suicide at his home in Idaho. Years after he died, the FBI released files showing that they had been monitoring him for the last 20 years of his life.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Hemingway's FBI file mainly covers his WWII Cuba intelligence work with scant later entries and was obtained via FOIA not proactively released; it does not confirm sustained active monitoring for his final 20 years. vault.fbi.gov/ernest-miller-… ladailymirror.com/2011/07/02/hem…

If you're a US citizen you should be able to get unchained AI access. Should be law. This is getting bonkers. I'm literally about to buy 2 dgx stations

Nightmare fuel. I had a similar experience with a full RCE report. I don't trust these companies at all.
A few months ago, I realized that no matter how unusual my research topic was, whenever I used OpenAI’s models, I always ended up with a duplicate/scoop. Yeah we will never get the “evidence”. But every time? That is too suspicious for me to use GPT for anything innovative..

Don't trust companies. Ever.
Asshole design from Discord. They recently introduced a "feature" to make all your messages searchable by Google. Users went to check and it was initially off for many. But then in a few days Discord sneakily auto-enabled it, AFTER the users already checked and thought it's off.

Welp I'm canceling my sub.
openai just emailed me about daybreak blue. to get trusted access you have to turn on advanced account security, which turns off "improve the model for everyone." starting nov 29 they'll use daybreak sessions on personal accounts to train their models anyway. even with that setting off. so the people they trust with cyber tooling are the ones whose sessions go into training by default. business and enterprise accounts are exempt. i get why they want it. defender sessions are exactly the data you'd use to build safeguards against cyber misuse. but don't make me flip off a training toggle as a security requirement and then ignore the toggle.

haha, so apparently OpenAI are about to start training on your Daybreak Blue sessions, with no way to opt out. Literally stealing people's private work, as they do it, is cartoonishly evil. It also will presumably kill Daybreak usage by security researchers. Or at least, it should. The thing OAI have had to swear they are not doing to math researchers, they are now explicitly about to start doing to security researchers. Yet another reminder of the importance of open models.
