Urbit is a computer built with networking, ownership, and durability as foundational design principles. A computer that you can trust to be yours, forever.

All the haters said the Urbit desire of a stack short enough to understand was quixotic and delusional.
So basically, today PHP got two critical bugs that let anyone run code on your server without even logging in, which is bad, and then the details leaked before the patch was even out, which is worse, and it works on WordPress and MediaWiki and Magento and Joomla and Laravel, and Censys says like 1.5 million servers are running a version with no fix, so the NSA was like "take your system offline," and the FBI was like "take your system offline," and CISA and the UK and CERT-EU were all like "take your system offline," and then the Prime Minister of Japan, the actual Prime Minister, posted at 5:55 in the morning telling 48.8 million people to take their system offline, so everyone took their system offline, like the Dutch cybersecurity agency took its own website offline, and the Dutch parliament went offline, and the Port of Rotterdam went offline, and Finland and France and Denmark started pulling government sites, and Wikipedia went down, and Archive.org went down, and Asana and GOG and Something Awful went down, and the University of Vienna's webmail went down for some reason, and that's just PHP. Because GitLab also dropped a CVSS 10.0, which is the highest score they give out, for a bug that's been there since 2014, so that's every self-hosted GitLab for twelve years, and then LiteLLM 1.107.0 got hijacked and shipped a credential stealer and a remote access trojan in every single wheel and the Docker images, including latest, and you didn't even have to import it, just installing it was enough, and it's the second time this year, and then Railway paused every deployment on the entire platform because someone got into the environment variables, so now everyone has to rotate every secret they've ever stored there, and TiDB Cloud said someone was walking around inside with stolen credentials for basically a month and an extortion group says they took 10.6 terabytes, and Zeabur got breached for the second time in two months and is just shutting down, like the whole company, and Node.js patched remote code execution and a TLS bypass, and CISA says Plex is being actively exploited, and someone took over 300 Tor exit relays to steal SSH passwords, and SafePay ransomware has hit over 600 critical infrastructure orgs, and India's biggest bank filed a data loss incident, and Japan has been in an official state of emergency in cyberspace since October 9, which honestly explains the 5:55 AM post. Oh, and eMudhra, a certificate authority that's issued over 60 million certificates, whose entire job is proving websites are who they say they are, was supposed to be using private keys that are random numbers over a hundred digits long, and one of them was 4. Just 4. And the others were like 66 and 237. Anyway, it's Wednesday.

Resources for anyone new or returning to Urbit
If you are on the network, give a shout in the Urbit Foundation group (~halbex-palheb/uf-public) and people will be glad to show you around. Looking at the urbit.org blog is also a good place to keep an eye out for happenings ("This Month in Urbit" posts in particular). If you are having trouble getting your ship running, shoot an email to [email protected]. Or, if you have an AI agent at your disposal, they are getting pretty helpful these days! Point it at the site and ask it to help you better understand urbit.

You are going to fucking love Urbit.
This story shows how hilariously broken online identity verification is from all relevant angles. 1. Your SSN, DOB, address history, etc. are sitting in countless data breaches and data-broker dumps. They’re cheap and widely available to basically anyone who looks. 2. KYC/AML mostly just checks that the data exists and matches a real person. It doesn’t confirm the person signing up is actually the real person behind that identity. Result: Amanda Smith spent three nights in jail and now faces up to six years in prison over a $1,000 CashApp scam account opened with her SSN and DOB. It wasn't necessarily opened by her, and the phone, IP, device, address, and other details don’t match. The funniest (and yes, saddest) part is CashApp wouldn't give her information about the account because she can’t prove she’s the owner. Her personal info was good enough to open the account, but not good enough to access it in the future, apparently. To be clear, CashApp is likely just following the law here. Anyway, we need to burn it all down and start fresh.

The scope Urbit ID is often conflated with the scope of the Azimuth and Ecliptic contracts on Ethereum. But this could not be further from the truth. Azimuth is just one slice of the Urbit ID public key infrastructure (PKI). Check out this article from the guys at @GroundwireBTC in the @UrbitSTJ to learn more about how they are using Urbit comets and Bitcoin to carve out another slice of the Urbit address space for secure and sybil-resistant networking in the AI era.

The man, the myth, the legend. @littel_wolfur with an insane demo of urbit multi-ship use on the go. Why wouldn't you want your phone to work like this?
wanted a nicer way to use urbit apps on my phone across planets so i built this. if an app has an aero manifest in its desk it will use the swift version of the app (you can see it when i switch to %seer below). i wonder if you can somehow ship compiled swift in a desk…

Is there a private, multiplayer place for humans and agents to collaborate in the agentic miasma we’re all swimming in? Yes, says the competition. It’s called Tlon.

Today's album was picked by ~datder-sonnet, who has been working on working on Azimov. Use your Urbit identity to connect to your computer from anywhere, without needing to run an Urbit server. Like Tailscale, using Urbit identities. Check it out! azimov.network/

This evening I booted an Urbit ship using the Ares Nock interpreter and the Vere I/O layer. It's not the first time this has been done, but it's the first time in about two years or so. Ares has landed on Mars again.
