Marty Warren, USW National Director, argues that Cleveland-Cliffs’ decision to lay off workers contradicts the commitments it made when acquiring Stelco, leaving Canadian workers to pay the price for a strategy that benefits its U.S. operations. More: theglobeandmail.com/business…

A strong forest sector helps support the public services British Columbians rely on. Through stumpage, taxes, tenure fees and other revenues, the forest sector in BC generates $3.4 billion annually for federal, provincial and municipal governments—helping fund health care, education, infrastructure and other priorities across the province. When forestry is strong, the benefits reach far beyond the mill. #BCForestry #BCPoli

B.C.’s forest sector is at a breaking point. Immediate action is required. Organizations representing workers, manufacturers, contractors, communities and businesses across B.C.’s highly integrated forest sector have come together to call on Premier David Eby and the Provincial government to urgently establish a Forestry Crisis Action Group. Led by the Premier’s Office, the group would bring together senior government decision-makers and forest sector representatives with a clear mandate: get wood moving, reduce costs, remove regulatory barriers, protect operating businesses, and retain—not retrain—B.C.’s skilled forestry workforce. We stand ready to work with the Premier and Cabinet to stabilize the sector, protect jobs and restore B.C.’s global competitiveness. The four ferries BC Ferries are building in China won’t be the last ferries we need. We need a plan to build the next ferries we need here with Canadian parts by Canadian workers. #buildthemhere #bcpoli #bclab

Kim Haakstad, President & CEO of COFI, says the breakdown in Canada–U.S. trade talks will create real challenges for BC’s forest sector, but Ottawa had to walk away if negotiators couldn't secure a deal that worked for Canadians broadly. With punishing U.S. tariffs hitting BC forest products, the need for urgent action here at home is even greater. Get more wood moving. Reduce costs. Remove regulatory barriers. These are the things we can control, and the steps we need to take to keep people working, mills operating and BC producers competitive. 🔗 Read the full story: ctvnews.ca/vancouver/article… #BCForestry #Forestry #Trade #BCpoli #CDNpoli

No deal is better than a bad deal. Better to fight now rather than accept a shitty deal. New 50% tariffs will hurt, but Canada can retaliate, provide real support to affected workers & industries, & double-down on strengthening our Canadian industrial capacity.
