More worrying news on inflation and for interest rates... ☹️ BRC survey finds shop price inflation jumped to 2.1% year on year in October, from 1.4% in September. "The dam is starting to break on the huge wave of costs retailers have absorbed over the last two years." brc.org.uk/news-and-events/n…

Another day of monster balancing costs...Just shy of £40 million and probably closer to it than this chart indicates once the full costs are taken into account @Miatsf @mgshanks @AndrewBowie_MP @ClaireCoutinho @harrietc @ColinMoynihanUK @drlukeevans @ashley7fox @TiceRichard @cmackinlay @DavidGHFrost @mattwridley @Iromg @AllisonPearson @MerrynSW @EdConwaySky @afneil @mattotele @jonathan_leake @julietsamuel @energygovuk

Chart of the Day 🤓 By popular demand, here's one of UK exports both of goods and of services, and to both the EU and the rest of the world... 🤔 Three quick takeaways: 1⃣ exports of services are more important than exports of goods - and have continued to grow rapidly 2⃣ exports of goods to the EU have fallen slightly in volume terms since 2019, but they had barely grown for many years - even when the UK was in the EU 3⃣ exports of goods to the rest of the world have also been relatively weak since 2019 - so any problems on the goods side cannot just be due to Brexit

How any Chancellor can look at the state of the economy, the job losses, struggling businesses and sectors like Hospitality, and think, let’s increase their wage bills AGAIN… is totally beyond me. This is a deliberate demolition of small businesses. RIP THE ECONOMY 🪦
EXCLUSIVE John Healey will announce plans to increase the minimum wage by nearly 4 per cent but slow the rise for young people after warnings that they are being priced out of jobs The Times has been told that the national living wage, which applies to those aged 21 and over, is expected to rise from £12.71 to around £13.20 — an increase of 3.9 per cent However, Healey has decided not to repeat the big rises of the past two budgets in the national minimum wage, which applies to those aged 18 to 21 It will rise broadly in line with the rate for older workers - from £10.85 to around £11.27, an increase of 3.9 per cent It effectively spells the end of Labour’s manifesto pledge to bring the “discriminatory” minimum wage for young people into line with the living wage for older workers in this parliament The minimum wage increased by 26 per cent between 2025 and 2026, leading to stark warnings from employers that it risked impeding efforts to get 1 million “Neets” - young people not in education, employment or training - into work. Healey alluded to the approach in an interview with The Times last week, in which he spoke of the importance of the “trade-off between the level of the minimum wage and the employment rate” thetimes.com/article/c9142a2…

The NESO board has also been asleep at the wheel. Anyone who has ever had a board position knows that culture is set at the very top... If the board isn't interested in the concerns of engineers the exec won't be either
NESO latest: “We’re pond life to him.” @thetimes reveals that the three unions representing employees at Britain’s grid operator wrote to the board about management behaviour months ago. times-comment.com/b4953226

This says it all. Parliament has cancelled the debate planned for this evening on AI - because the debate beforehand on the Post Office is (like the post itself) taking too long. On the day Anthropic files for its IPO Britain is debating Victorian communications infrastructure

She could have contacted me privately any time to say her views had changed, if they have. I'd have been entirely supportive. What she's chosen to do instead is yet another bit of public brand repositioning, without talking to me, but using me for her purpose. It's getting old.
