First sentence, sure, not the others: understanding is academic, quasi-scientific—in criticism, faux-objective. Criticism is also literary, subjective, prophetic, political, contentious; self-questioning is part of it, but the impersonal "maybe" is as reductive as thumbs up/down.

I don't think it should be about anything else. I have seen and liked many documentaries that provide much more than information. This is my consistent irritation about the discourse around the film. If I dislike it, why does it mean that I have somehow failed to understand it?

i don't agree with vinson about the movie (i liked it) but i agree that "it's actually about 'truth' and documentaries" is a pretty weak defense, and not really even very accurate

"Just as our national-defense establishment’s alphabet soup of lethal agencies gets little pushback for its engagements with jargon—its often opaque talk of “threat levels” and “terrorist cells” and the many “bright lines” at whose thresholds diplomacy must end and violence begin—football fans have come to tolerate, and even crave, a surprisingly high level of nerdy, insidery talk." - @vcunningham
