Every time you try a new vegan food, you get closer to being vegan.

One of the most irritating things as a vegan is picking up a bar of dark chocolate and seeing the ingredients contain some sort of dairy product.

Pollan reflects on the progress (and lack thereof) made in the 20 years since the publication of his Omnivore’s Dilemma. An accurate assessment of where things currently stand, that unfortunately leaves out the substantial wins against factory farming.

Sorry, Jose, we can't take action against childhood hunger until we rid the world of foie gras. If that reasoning sounds absurd to you, the inverse is equally absurd. Or, to put it a little differently: No way, Jose.
Jose Andres says we can’t ban foie gras because we need to solve ICE, global hunger, and ‘so many other issues’ before we can worry about animals. It reminds me of when I collected signatures in Chicago to preserve the city’s foie gras ban. In wealthy parts of town, high-minded liberals would chide me: 'You’re collecting signatures for ducks? People are getting shot in this city. You should be ashamed.’ When I went to the poor parts of town — the places where people were actually getting shot — no one said that. Instead, when I explained how foie gras was made, the near-uniform reaction was: ‘They do that to a bird just so some rich asshole can eat foie gras? That’s f’d up.’ Almost everyone signed. For political elites, banning animal cruelty is a distraction from the Big Serious issues they’re focused on. For most people, it’s just common sense.

>let's end hunger and then we talk Let's restrict replies to only people who agree with me.
Sure but then let’s ban beef and pork and chicken….and also vegetables too because is a study that says that maybe indications of suffering…..we have children hungry in USA and the World….lets end hunger and then we talk….. 😇

Vegan restaurant owners don't get nearly enough respect and admiration. For so many of them, they are putting all their time into a business with brutal margins and a high rate of failure in order to make vegan food more accessible. I don't think most people with normal jobs appreciate just how tough it is to survive in the restaurant business, particularly the *vegan* restaurant biz. If you can afford it, you can make a big difference by eating at these places more often!

Here's one to share.
The meat industry tries very hard to keep cameras out of factory farms and slaughterhouses -- and a new undercover video shows why. Some day, our descendants will wonder about our collective blind spot to animal cruelty. A gift link to my column: nytimes.com/2026/10/17/opini…

It's not just slaughterhouses and cages that are objectionable elements of animal farming. Transport is yet another nightmare.

Always check to see what the vegan option is. Even if you’re not vegan, just doing that much puts you far ahead of 99% of everyone else.

Two crucial things that many vegans should focus on before going vegan, but don't.

Good reporting and some careful thinking about the seemingly worldwide decline in the numbers of vegan restaurants.
I became very angsty about the great dying of vegan restaurants after my neighborhood spot announced its closure this month. I wanted to know whether this is a real trend (& found that it's indeed probably real) & to what degree it even matters for the animal movement, beyond 1/

Get in the habit of asking your fellow vegans if they're taking their B-12. You'll be shocked by how many have no idea it's crucial!

When you encounter a vegan who is not taking their B-12, ask, beg, and demand them to read this. Knowing this stuff can prevent disaster! vegan.com/health/b12/

Lots of discouraging stuff here, but the pendulum will inevitably swing the other way. Even now, there are still countless terrific vegan foods and restaurants that weren't available five years ago. sfgate.com/food/article/cali…

Time to start looking out during your shopping trips for sweet potatoes, winter squash, persimmons, and apples. Vegans doubtless do a better job than most people of following the seasons, but there are still plenty of vegans who don't take advantage of local seasonal produce. It's the easiest way to eat better, cheaper, fresher food!
