I've updated the annotated Contra (US) NES source code to also be able to build the Probotector rom. Probotector is the PAL-region version of Contra and is mostly identical to the US version with the majority of the differences being sprites, and intro graphics. See 🧵for links.
* github.com/vermiceli/nes-con… lists out each of the differences
* github.com/vermiceli/nes-con… contains the Probotector-specific build instructions
* github.com/vermiceli/nes-con… shows all the Probotector sprites
* tcrf.net/Contra_(NES)#Europe… shows a lot of the graphical differenes
Also, if you're using Mesen as an emulator, there are a few useful lua scripts that you can us (Debug -> Script Window). Here are some examples: show enemy collisions, show background collisions and showing an enemy value (helpful for figuring out what an enemy is doing).
I wanted to highlight that the Contra disassembly will build a .dbg file. This includes debugging symbols, which allow many emulators to show comments while debugging. If you were ever interested in what's going on for Contra (or any NES game), this is a good way to get learn.
I've published an annotated disassembly of the US edition of Contra for the NES on github.

@DisplacedGamers Your Behind the Code episode on Contra's Konami Code was very inspiring and helped me start doing this work. It was my first time doing 6502 and NES development. Thank you. I hope you can find something interesting in this.
