He travelled to Rajasthan to photograph the stars. He returned with an award-winning photograph of a scorpion digging its home in the sand. After 14 years of photographing wildlife, Sitaram Dinkar Raul stepped beyond the familiar forests of the Western Ghats to explore Jaisalmer’s shifting sand dunes. There, a chance encounter with a burrowing scorpion led to a remarkable photograph. But capturing it took three to four days of observation, patience and repeated attempts — with just 90 seconds to photograph the scorpion digging its burrow. The result? Burrowing Scorpion, which won the Invertebrate Behaviour category at Wildlife Photographer of the Year, one of the world’s most prestigious wildlife photography competitions, organised by London’s Natural History Museum. Selected from over 65,000 entries worldwide, Sitaram’s photograph captures a tiny creature doing something extraordinary, and reminds us how much of the natural world remains waiting to be discovered.
