Just read this Japanese review.ðŸđ
Just watched India’s new Epic #Ramayana directed by #NiteshTiwari, finally in its original Hindi version. And yeah, #RamayanaRiseOfALegend is both anime come to life (if you ever watched #SHURATO, get ready!!!) and a classic EPIC with capital letters, like those magnificent Hollywood gems of the 50s & 60s, with that grandeur, lavishness & sheer scale, made with today’s technology which allowed it to go the extra mile technically impossible to pull off back in the day. To me, it felt like a full circle. Curiously, it wasn’t India, but Japan which prepared me to enjoy this story as much as I did. As a child, anime #SaintSeiya made me fall in love with Greek mythology, and because of that anime, I was presented with another mythology based anime #SHURATO, which introduced me to the rich Hindu mythology and the fascinating conflicts between the divine people of Deva and the Asuras. Watching this film made me go back to my childhood in a sense. #Ramayana itself follows the exact same narrative & visual structure of a classic shonen anime, abusing of slow motion, larger than life battles, color, loud, incredible scores, lots of drama, fantastic beings, an underdog which ends up corrupted by manipulative parents to become a badass, overpowered demigod nemesis blinded by rage and thirst for revenge, pitted against a virtuous, righteous hero, which happens to be chosen as an avatar of an ancient God. And as in an anime, both will face several challenges before actually facing each other, because their face off is the end game. And obviously, the virtuous hero has an even more virtuous girl who becomes the plot device which will finally force the eminent future showdown. So if you love anime, and if you love anime structure, there is no way you won’t be at least entertained by 3h15min of one of the most well realised “anime to live-action adaptation” wannabe. And if like #Dune, #StarWars, #GameOfThrones, #LordOfTheRings or even #TheOdyssey, so much here shall feel familiar to you. The legend of Prince Rama is so ancient, with all its kingdoms, celestial & hellish worlds, and well defined characters, that basically every western epic, mythology or fantasy has borrowed - or straight up stolen - elements from it. There are iconic scenes of #ChristopherNolan’s #TheOdyssey for instance that you’ll see also here almost shot by shot, only difference being #Ramayana does it more colourfully and with Prince Rama instead of Odysseus. The visuals are incredible, apart from the CGI giants and monsters which look awful, specially their faces. They really look like late 2000’s videogame creatures, taking you out of the movie everytime they show up, specially when they talk. Which is funny because there are other VFX creatures and sceneries which look insane, such as the vulture #Jatayu. I really couldn’t understand why the giants and orcs-like guys looked so off, while everything else, even in a same scene, looked spotless. And as I said before, #Ramayana has an anime-series structure, not the traditional Hollywood 3-arc film structure in which things get progressively bigger. Most of the spectacle in the film are concentrated at the beginning, then it gives space for more drama as it progresses. And the way the film ends is literally anime-like cliffhanger for next season/saga, not a typical closure. So for a casual moviegoer, it might feel like the film ends smaller, instead of in a higher note than when it started. Or they might feel like it drags on its 2nd half, which has less epicness / lavishness than the first. It might be an uneven experience for first timers or for who has the Hollywood structure as a dogma. But to me, #Ramayana felt like a homecoming somehow, in which so many of cultural niche things I love came together like the heroes in the end of #AvengersEndgame. India never left the historical/legend EPIC genre behind, and #Ramayana shows how far we can now go with them. #Ramayana is already in theatres worldwide.

🎎 RAMAYANA - REVIEW THE GREATEST TRIUMPH IN INDIAN CINEMA. I have always believed that stories deeply rooted in our civilisation, culture and collective consciousness deserve to be told on the grandest cinematic canvas possible. They deserve scale, ambition, devotion and, above all, an extraordinary commitment from the people bringing them to life. Over the years, we have heard plenty of talk about ambitious adaptations of our epics, but rarely witnessed the conviction required to bring them to life. I had my share of scepticism about Ramayana too. But this film genuinely hits different. The sheer scale of Nitesh Tiwari and Namit Malhotra's vision is extraordinary. From the breathtaking landscapes to the grandeur of its world-building, Ramayana attempts something Indian cinema has rarely witnessed. Yet, my biggest concern was whether it would connect emotionally, because if it got that right, everything else would become secondary. Fortunately, it passes that litmus test. Beneath the spectacle lies a compelling emotional core that gives the film its soul. Nitesh Tiwari deserves immense credit for bringing the human elements of this epic to life while shouldering its enormous cultural and spiritual responsibility. Namit Malhotra, meanwhile, deserves equal appreciation for backing this ambitious vision, assembling global talent and investing in world-class technical expertise to take Indian storytelling to the global stage. The greatest mortal man to have ever walked this earth, Prabhu Shree Ram, deserves nothing less than the finest portrayal, the finest talent and an extraordinary labour of love, devotion and surrender. Bringing a character of such immense cultural, spiritual and emotional significance to life demands far more than acting prowess. It requires a deep understanding of the man behind the divinity. And #RanbirKapoor seems to have truly risen to that occasion. What I particularly appreciate about the portrayal of Prabhu Shree Ram is its emotional depth. He isn't presented as an emotionless figure who remains perpetually calm. Rama experiences anger, grief, love, frustration, vulnerability and anguish. When Maa Sita is abducted, you can feel his devastation, helplessness and anguish. These emotions make his portrayal deeply human and bring out the human side of this revered figure. Even in the battle sequences, Rama is portrayed as a warrior fighting formidable forces rather than an all-powerful divine figure who can simply snap his fingers and end a battle. You feel the physical struggle, intensity, courage and human effort behind every fight. Because what makes Rama extraordinary is not the absence of human emotions or limitations, but his ability to rise above them, exercise restraint and remain unwavering in his commitment to Dharma. On the other hand, #Yash brings an extraordinary sense of menace to Ravana. His pride, ego and unrestrained rage are constantly visible. He has the kind of presence that makes you believe he could destroy anyone who dares to challenge him. Yash has absolutely OWNED Ravana. His screen presence, physicality and commanding persona make him an imposing force every time he appears. Sharad Kelkar as the Hindi voice is simply masterful casting. I had absolutely no doubts about him. His voice adds another layer of menace and gravitas to Yash's already formidable presence. Sai Pallavi, unfortunately, didn't quite work for me in several portions, despite her acting abilities. I particularly appreciate the decision to portray Mata Sita as a warrior, an often-overlooked facet of her character. Parshuram's portrayal and sequence could also have been considerably more impactful, while Ravi Dubey brings Lakshman to life. The highlight, however, is the Jatayu versus Ravana sequence. The choreography, visual effects, scale and sheer imagination make it one of the most technically impressive action sequences I have witnessed in Indian cinema. DNEG has absolutely cooked. The Jatayu–Ravana battle is a glorious cinematic triumph, one that deserves a place in the history of Indian cinema. The music by A.R. Rahman and Hans Zimmer, however, didn't quite live up to my expectations. Given the stature of these composers and the scale of the project, I was hoping for something considerably more memorable and emotionally stirring. Unfortunately, the score doesn't always rise to the occasion or elevate certain scenes to the level they deserve. I genuinely hope #Ramayana opens doors for many more stories from our folklore, civilisation and history. We have an extraordinary treasure trove waiting to be explored, and these stories deserve this level of ambition, investment and cinematic treatment. For me, Ramayana is more than an ambitious adaptation. It is a statement of intent and a significant step towards taking our civilisational stories to the world. It demonstrates what Indian cinema can achieve when conviction, imagination, resources and world-class technical expertise come together. This is the kind of cinema our stories deserve. Jai Shree Ram 🙏

#RAMAYANA: A VISUAL SPECTACLE THAT FAILS TO EVOKE BHAKTI & BHAAVNA.. Rating- ⭐ïļâïļâïļ Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana rides on two pillars – grand visual effects and drama and emotions. First and foremost, I would like to applaud the producers for attempting a film of this scale. Investing such a massive amount of money in a project like this, despite knowing the limitations of the Indian theatrical market, is truly a courageous decision. Visually the film is stunning. I wouldn’t compare it with Avatar or The Lord of the Rings, as they belong to an entirely different league. However, it would not be wrong to say that Ramayana features some of the finest visuals ever witnessed in Indian cinema. Having said that, while the visuals are spectacular, the execution of the action sequences lacks the clap worthy high moments and impact we experience in SS Rajamouli’s films. You certainly witness grandeur on screen, but most of these sequences are something you simply keep watching rather than experiencing. They lack the elevation that gives you goosebumps or makes audiences erupt into applause and whistles inside cinemas. The opening sequence featuring the battle between Indra and the Asuras, Ravana’s entry and the Jatayu sequence towards the climax are impressive, but none of them are truly extraordinary. Several creatures and monsters (Asuras) also look rather cartoonish. Now comes the film’s weakest link – drama and emotions. We are all familiar with the story of the Ramayana, which makes its execution the most crucial aspect of the film. Unfortunately, this is where the film falters. Apart from the Vanvaas sequence, there is hardly a moment that genuinely touches your heart or brings tears to your eyes, even Sita haran sequence is completely flat. The film seriously lacks the devotional connect and spiritual essence that one associates with the Ramayana. The sense of bhakti, devotion and divinity that audiences experienced in films like Hanuman Ansh, Mahavatar Narasimha and Kantara is largely missing here. For the most part, the screenplay feels boring and unnecessarily stretched. The performances are fairly decent, but #Yash is the one who carries the film on his shoulders. Every time he appears on screen, the film gets a significant boost. You genuinely feel that Yash was born to play Ravana. Such is the impact he creates in the role! #RanbirKapoor is very good as Shri Ram. He brings the calmness, composure and grace required to portray this iconic character. However his portrayal of Lord Parshuram is a different story altogether, with his dialogue delivery appearing rather absurd in those portions. #SaiPallavi as Maa Sita is a complete miscast. I find it difficult to imagine audiences accepting her in this particular role. Ravi Dubey does a good job as Lakshman. Arun Govil and the other supporting actors also perform their parts well. The music and background score are another major letdown. Hans Zimmer’s signature musical touch is hardly noticeable throughout the film, barring the Dharti Hai Ambar Hai background score. AR Rahman’s songs are disappointing. Not a single track stands out as a memorable chartbuster that audiences would want to revisit. Overall, Ramayana is an above-average cinematic experience. If you walk into the cinema with normal expectations, you are unlikely to be hugely disappointed. However considering the scale, ambition and expectations attached to this project, the film certainly falls short of its potential. And yes, the brief glimpse of Lord Hanuman is arguably the biggest highlight of the film! I genuinely hope Ramayana succeeds at the box office because, honestly, I don’t see another filmmaker attempting to bring the epic to the big screen on this kind of scale anytime soon. At the box office i don’t think it will beat #Dhurandhar2 India & Global lifetime collection. #RamayanaReview

Rahman is one of the greatest composer of India. But he has lost his touch. Not even a single song of Ramayana has got the above expectations music. The same happened with him in Chhava also. Dont know if he is underperforming deliberately or what. But 👎 for this.
