Pels fans de les fusions de municipis:
Eight years after Denmark merged 239 councils into 66, places that lost their town hall had 26% fewer children and 35% lower house prices. In 2027 Denmark folded 271 municipalities into 98, merging 239 of them into 66 larger ones. The basic idea (which makes every finance ministry happy), is that bigger councils spread fixed costs over more people, they cut duplicated jobs and deliver the same services via economies of scale. Earlier Danish research backed that up, finding administrative costs per head fell after the mergers. But each new municipality kept only one town hall. Every other former council lost its administrative heart, and a bunch of economists wanted to know what happened to the places left behind. They used Danish registry data covering every resident and every firm from 1996 to 2015, mapped onto 8,530 small neighbourhoods of at least 150 households each. They then compared the 2,187 neighbourhoods whose municipality lost its town hall with neighbourhoods in municipalities the reform left untouched. Because the untouched ones skew urban (Copenhagen, Aarhus, Odense), the authors built a weighted blend of them that tracked the losing areas closely before 2007, so the comparison is like for like. The first domino is obvious. Neighbourhoods that lost their town hall shed about three full-time admin staff each, roughly a third of what they had, and the drop never reversed. Then the losses spread to services nobody had voted to cut. School staffing fell by 17% on average across the nine years after the reform, and public-sector jobs overall by 21%. Private-sector jobs followed, down 16%, as the local economy lost the steady trade that a council and its staff bring. People responded the way you'd expect. Each affected neighbourhood lost about three more working-age residents than it gained every year, around 0.7% of its population. The number of children fell 13%, which tells you young families were among the first to go. Those who stayed travelled 10% further to work, and their wages rose by just 1%, barely compensating for the extra time on the road. House prices fell 15% on average. By 2015 the gap had widened. Against comparable untouched areas, public employment was down 38%, school staffing 36%, private jobs 24%, children 26% and house prices 35%. The results hold when the comparison group changes. Comparing losing municipalities with neighbours that kept their town hall, or with the second-largest partner in the same merger, still shows clear damage, and so does using the number of council seats to predict which places lost out. The geography is uneven tho. Neighbourhoods near Denmark's four biggest cities saw residents drift into those cities. Further out, people moved to whichever town had kept the town hall, and those winners added public-sector jobs. So a reform meant partly to slow urbanisation ended up feeding big cities in some places and building up regional hubs in others. link to full article: doi.org/10.1093/jeg/lbaf038

Buenas tardes amigos.

I can confirm that this is the most democratic sport in the world! Literally! What I saw impressed me deeply. Of course, it all looks very unsafe, even dangerous. But these people have trained very thoroughly and know well what they are doing. Every step, every movement is developed in advance through lengthy training sessions. Yet the main takeaway is that this is how Catalans learn to mobilize together very quickly, to completely rely on one another, and to find a shared balance in a single breath, level by level, closer and closer to the goal. Families, friends, children, parents, and grandparents, Catalans of all nationalities and races unite this way. The stability of the tower is built on universal mutual reliance and trust. It is genuine, true human democracy, a manifestation of family and universal values without loud words, with a real sense of shared effort. The casteller movement is extraordinarily popular across Catalonia. Here might lie the answer to the Catalan secret: the ability to mobilize very quickly, to cooperate productively and successfully to achieve great and beautiful goals. They have been learning and practicing this for decades, even centuries. Few sports in the world can be so unifying for people of all ages, genders, and nationalities at once. I think this tradition will allow Catalans to build their tower to achieve the highest goal. They know what it means to have a shared shoulder, common stability, trust, and the courage to climb toward very complex summits. Castellers are ready for it in literally a couple of minutes. Nothing characterizes a nation better than its shared passions and traditions. The casteller movement is an impressive and beautiful testament to the Catalan spirit. As I mentioned before: for the Balts, the choir movement was the mobilizing force; for Catalans, these clubs undoubtedly build the spirit of national unity. Casteller competitions and performances are admired by anyone who has had the good fortune to see them in person. It is only the fifth day of my trip, and once again I am truly amazed. From this day on, I look upon the castellers as heroes. Notably, another tradition popular in Spain - bullfighting - has been banned by law in Catalonia for several years. Madrid is trying to force Catalonia to lift this ban. But Catalans do not want to allow an elaborate show of animal killing in their land. In the Catalan view, this is a brutally cruel practice unworthy of a civilized European society. The Spanish authorities disagree. Interestingly, Spanish media interpret this ban as politically motivated. In fact, several years ago, non-political animal welfare organizations requested the ban on brutal bullfighting. Seeing public support for this initiative, the Catalan Parliament banned this terrible medieval tradition. Their choice is the remarkably democratic casteller movement. Such clubs are everywhere in Catalonia; hundreds of people from other countries come to learn, and the @BBC and other major world media dedicate special films to this unusual tradition. Shoulder to shoulder, level upon level, shared calm, shared balance, shared trust, a shared goal, shared courage, shared summits, and hearts in a single rhythm. That is the story of the Catalan castellers. That is Catalonia!

After days of fighting, the Sudanese army and its allies have advanced deep into Sodari and West Barah localities in an offensive launched to seize remaining RSF positions in North Kordofan State. The military has also attacked areas west of the state capital, El-Obeid, capturing Al-Mamsuka, just west of Al-Ay’ara village, and west of RSF-held Abu Qa’ud; and Jebel Abu Sinun, which is located northwest of El-Obeid. The army now fully controls five of the state’s eight localities: Jabra Al-Sheikh, Barah, Um Dam Haj Ahmed, Rahad and Um Ruwaba. It also holds most of El-Sheikan Locality, where El-Obeid is located, and the main road (known as Al-Sadarat or Al-Inqaz Al-Qarbi Highway) linking the city to the capital Khartoum region. The latest offensive comes nearly two months after the mmilitary’s July offensive led to the capture of several towns along the road and subsequently reopened that road. It aims to push RSF fighters farther from the areas captured then, providing greater protection for El-Obeid and its supply routes from central Sudan. In West Barah, army control now extends west from Al-Qa’ah toward Um Za’atr. In Sodari Locality, troops have reached Tna, a small but stratetic town located about 40 kilometers southeast of Sodari town. The RSF still controls Sodari town, Umm Badr and Hamrat al-Sheikh. It also controls Abu Qa’ud and Umm Sumaima west of El-Obeid, as well as Kazgil to the south on the border with South Kordofan State, giving the rebel group a continued presence near the state capital. Our map of territorial control in North Kordofan shows the army’s latest advances, remaining RSF positions and how territorial control is divided as the offensive continues. Dona feina a autors, il·lustradors, traductors, editors, impressors i llibreters. No demano cap privilegi.

The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Wednesday retook Ambro, the capital of Ambro locality in northwestern North Darfur, after the town changed hands several times in recent months. The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and allied Joint Force had regained control of Ambro in mid-August after the RSF first seized it in late June. Fighting has also continued this month elsewhere in Dar Zaghawa, particularly around Karnoi locality. A video reviewed by Sudan War Monitor and geolocated to the southwestern part of Ambro shows RSF fighters gathered beside containers and what appears to be an ammunition storage site left behind by SAF and allied forces. The town is strategically important because it lies in the Zaghawa heartland of northern Darfur and near routes leading toward Tina and the Chad border, making control of Ambro important for military movement and supply lines across the northwestern front. 📍 15° 0'15.05"N 23°43'9.70"E.

My favourite trivia about the games—Antigua and Barbuda, a country about as far from the Eurasian steppe as you can get, holds two gold medals thanks to the efforts of International Grandmaster Trevor Simon in Toguz korgool, a mancala-style game.
World Nomad Games seems to be getting quite a lot of attention this year compared to previous editions. Good for Kyrgyzstan!
