fascinating—a pre-Copernican understanding of the relationship between self and world
OK, I'll bite. If John Cassavetes is so insanely influential and brilliant, why have I not heard about him until recently?
I've been on a side-quest with classic and esoteric movies, mostly through the Criterion collection. I've watched dozens of Criterion closet picks from filmmakers and actors I admire.
They pick Cassavetes films ALL THE TIME. Probably more than any other director except Scorsese. I haven't seen a single Cassavetes film. I don't think I've ever heard anyone talk about a Cassavetes film outside of those videos.
I'm not a slouch on film, I've got a pretty wide spread on what I've seen & what I appreciate. How has Cassavetes slipped through that net so completely for so long?

Honored to be included in this year’s shortlist from the Pacific Northwest Bookseller’s Association.
glad to see Long-Haul covering this topic in a great article from @samrussek—plasma donation has always been one of the most egregious horrors of literal capitalist extraction, and combined with the maquiladora system and cross-border exploitation, it’s an utter nightmare
All along the US-Mexico border, workers cross checkpoints after their shifts in sweatshop factories to donate plasma to U.S. corporations, feeding the most profitable part of a global plasma industry.

⚡️ Mayor Zohran Mamdani's NYPD is poised to sign a three-year, $750,500 no-bid contract with Israeli surveillance firm Cognyte for FalcoNet, an AI-driven device that mimics a cell tower to track phones and can be mounted on police cars and drones or hidden in a backpack, the New York Daily News reported.
Cognyte won a tender to sell intercept spyware to Myanmar's state telecom weeks before the 2021 military coup, Reuters previously reported. Meta banned the firm the same year, saying its customers used fake accounts to target journalists and politicians in Kenya, Mexico and Indonesia.
The firm is part of an Israeli surveillance industry that grew big as a result of the military's monitoring of Palestinians, whose phone calls Israel's Unit 8200 has intercepted and stored by the millions, including to carry out genocide in Gaza and enforce a brutal illegal occupation in Jerusalem and the West Bank.

The grift is so transparent. Every one of these apocalyptic AI posts is written by a CEO trying to sell their shitty product.
This is the canary in the coal mine, y'all. The AI math doesn't math. Microsoft is offering buyouts for nearly a quarter of it's workforce.
AI adoption for businesses is a 24-month journey in a perfect scenario. They aren't seeing adoption fast enough to offset their CapEx spending... and they aren't alone. Add Anthropic's measly revenue numbers (compared to their CapEx), and hopefully you get the point.
These aren't buyouts because Microsoft found efficiencies with AI, they are buyouts because they (the AI industry) spend trillions (collectively) building the best tools the world has ever seen, and no one knows how to use them. digitalmeld.io/blog/who-is-p…
Fariña was Pynchon’s acidhead buddy, gone before his time. “Been Down So Long…” makes for an interesting point of comparison, like a controlled variable that helps define the madcap acidhead style that Pynchon drew on but spun into something altogether different

DON'T: read another weepy conversation w/ Michael Walzer where he belatedly admits to being wrong while also doubling down on being wrong
DO: Read this piece by me & @shaabiranks from 2023 where we critique Walzer/Just War Theory & the law of war re: Gaza

“‘This is a story about resilience, and hope,’ affirms Pawel. The UC Regents, battered from the right for being too woke and from the left for collaborating with Trumpism, will breathe a sigh of relief when they (or their PR departments) read this book."

Tony Platt reviews the new book by Miriam Pawel, “California Dreams: The Making and Remaking of the University of California.” Pawel’s focus on a few alumni, he writes, elides both radical traditions and unethical practices inextricable from UC history.
