Lost his life this day 27th.October 1940. PO. John Romney Mather….of Blackheath. London. One of THE FEW. bbm.org.uk/airmen/MatherJR.h… Killed when his Spitfire crashed and burned out in Hildenborough. The cause of the crash unknown but he may have been the victim of anoxia.

Lost his life this day 27th.October 1940. PO. Alexis Rene Isidore Ghislain Jottard. Belgian One of THE FEW. bbm.org.uk/airmen/Jottard.ht… He was shot down by an Me109 and reported Missing. Age 28. He  has a memorial grave in the Pelouse d'Honneur Cemetery at Evere, Brussels.

Lost his life this day 27th.October 1940. PO. Robert Basil Dewey….from Portsmouth. One of THE FEW. bbm.org.uk/airmen/Dewey.htm His Spitfire was shot down in a surprise attack by Me109s south of Maidstone and he was killed. Age 19. He is buried in Hornchurch Cemetery, Essex.

Lost his life this day 27th.October 1940. Sgt. John Alan Scott. One of THE FEW. bbm.org.uk/airmen/ScottJA.ht… He was shot down in his Spitfire and killed in combat with Me109s over Maidstone Age 22 he is buried in the Alperton Burial Ground, Wembley.

Lost his life this day 26th.October 1940. PO. Geoffrey Mervyn Simpson. New Zealand One of THE FEW. bbm.org.uk/airmen/SimpsonGM.… Spotting an enemy aircraft flying low in the vicinity of Boulogne, he went down but was attacked from the rear by Me109s. He was never heard of again.

Lost his life this day 26th.October 1940. Sgt. Douglas William Elcome. One of THE FEW. bbm.org.uk/airmen/Elcome.htm He failed to return from a routine patrol in his Spitfire. He was reported ‘Missing’ aged 21.

Lost his life this day 25th.October 1940. F/Lt. Franciszek Jastrzebski . Polish One of THE FEW. bbm.org.uk/airmen/Jastrzebsk… He failed to return from a patrol over the Channel. His Hurricane was seen to go into the sea. His body was washed ashore. Awarded the VM. KW. Croix de Guerre.

Lost his life this day 25th.October 1940. PO. Vilem Goth. Czech One of THE FEW. bbm.org.uk/airmen/Goth.htm Killed when he collided with another during combat over Tenterden. He is buried in Sittingbourne and Milton Cemetery, Kent. There is a Plaque at his home in Dacice.

Lost his life this day 23rd.October 1940. PO. Peter Richard Scott Hurst. One of THE FEW. bbm.org.uk/airmen/Hurst.htm After converting to Blenheims he joined 600 Squadron at Redhill. During a practice flight in cloud he crashed into a hill and was killed. Age 20.

Lost his life this day 22nd.October 1940. Sgt. Joseph Pearson Morrison. One of THE FEW. bbm.org.uk/airmen/MorrisonJP… He was shot down in his Hurricane in combat with enemy fighters over Dungeness. Killed..Age 25. Buried in St Andrew’s and Jesmond Cemetery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Lost his life this day 22nd.October 1940. FO. Peter Cape Beauchamp St. John. One of THE FEW. bbm.org.uk/airmen/St.John.ht… He was shot down in his Spitfire in combat with Me109s and killed. Age 23. He is buried in St Mary’s churchyard, Amersham.

Lost his life this day 22nd.October 1940. PO. Norman Bagshaw Heywood. One of THE FEW. bbm.org.uk/airmen/Heywood.ht… He was hit by anti-aircraft fire whilst in combat with Me109s over Folkestone. His Hurricane crashed and he was killed. Age 22.

Lost his life this day 21st.October 1940. PO. Wycliff Stuart Williams…of Dunedin. New Zealand. New Zealand One of THE FEW. bbm.org.uk/airmen/WilliamsWS… He took off in his Spitfire to intercept a raid on Cambridge. His engine cut out and he crashed and was killed. Age 20.

Lost his life this day 20th.October 1940. Sgt. Norman James Stocks. One of THE FEW. bbm.org.uk/airmen/Stocks.htm Three Blenheims had been sent out to look for a shot-down Enemy crew in a dinghy. They were intercepted by two Me109s and shot down. No photo. No Grave.

Lost his life this day 20th.October 1940. PO. Sydney Russell Gane. One of THE FEW. bbm.org.uk/airmen/Gane.htm His Blenheim was shot down by Me109s. He was able to bale out but he was machine-gunned while descending. Age 20.

Lost his life this day 20th.October 1940. PO. Maurice David Green. One of THE FEW. bbm.org.uk/airmen/GreenMD.ht… Shot down and killed by two Me109s. Age 20.

Mercifully just one death was recorded this day..the 18th.October 1940. Sgt. Edmund Eric Shepperd…from the Isle of Wight. One of THE FEW. bbm.org.uk/airmen/ShepperdEE… Killed in his Spitfire when it crashed near Dorchester in poor visibility. Age 23. Buried in Binstead Cemetery.

PO. Alexander Gordon Osmond….of London. One of THE FEW. bbm.org.uk/airmen/Osmand.htm He was killed 1943 operating in Hurricanes in Burma. He was one of 7 Hurricanes scrambled but his was shot down and he was killed. Age 28. Buried in Chittagong War Cemetery.
