Not gonna lie, I was rooting for Tampa. But if you like baseball, you have to tip your cap to the Brew Crew. A small market team with no high-paid free agents that plays the game as it was originally designed. They hit the ball and run the bases. They're a pleasure to watch.
Watching the World Series from Japan, and I have to say this. Like a lot of Japanese fans, I was cheering for Ohtani and the Dodgers. A three-peat would have been amazing. So yes, I was a little sad when Milwaukee swept them. But then I started reading about the Brewers. They have never won a World Series. Their last trip was in 1982. Some fans waited their whole lives for this. Some didn't get to see it. Bob Uecker, the voice of the Brewers, passed away in January 2025. His family asked the city to win this one for him. I'm not crying, you're crying. In Japan we love a story where patience finally pays off. 44 years is a lot of patience. Also, I learned there is a sausage race in Milwaukee. People in costumes running as sausages. I have never wanted to visit a city more. So here I am. A Dodgers fan in Japan, quietly cheering for Milwaukee tonight. 🍺⚾️ #WorldSeries2026 #Brewers

Today I watched World Series WNBA Finals Eagles-Cowboys and realized I didn't have any hockey. So I rewatched this for maybe the 30th time. Possibly the greatest Team USA win ever in any sport. #teamusa youtube.com/watch?v=UtwY8WAX…

Phone customer service can get worse. I just called a local transit agency and got a message that its AI is still learning and I should listen to the entirety of each of its statements before responding. Sigh. Now we have to be patient while the robots learn our jobs.

And in the end I needed a human being anyway. So I got to enjoy lengthy AI messages about issues that didn't concern me whatsoever before I could go down the dead-end that finally enabled me to request a human. Sigh. What's this going to be like in 20 years?

Happy sports equinox day! Today is the only day this year that you can (try to) watch an NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL and WNBA game at the exact same time, or as I call it: The Sickos Challenge.

One of the US' most famous conservative commentators writes about the poor quality candidates that people on both sides are expected to support. Worth a read, especially if you're at all conservative-minded. ewerickson.substack.com/p/ag…

Looking for explanations for conservatives winning British Columbia for the first time in a century, I found this. (BTW, naturally I wonder how this election might affect the US-Canada trade war.) thehub.ca/2026/10/25/why-dav…

This is shocking. BC's premier called an early election, assuming anger at Trump was enough for a big win. I'm not in BC and I don't know why the conservatives won. But, what a huge miscalculation.

Worth reading. This guy wrote 214 essays for Scientific American but eventually was dismissed because he kept insisting on facts and logic, even when it went against Woke 1 beliefs. Wokeness taking over WaPo and NYT is one thing. But this was SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN.
Here is my account of what happened to Scientific American before the latest meltdown, when the wokeness first began to rot this once great institution. michaelshermer.substack.com/…

Progressives hate freedom of speech
I was just forcefully removed from a @ThornsFC game for the crime of wearing an @xx_xyathletics t-shirt. I am in shock. We peacefully wore our shirts. We were assaulted by fans. Then WE were forced to leave – with FORCE by stadium security. I am utterly in shock.

Champagne decides not to expand to areas previously deemed not worthy of inclusion. It always looked like a plan to create more bottom-shelf Champagne. This decision is not about the sanctity of the AOC; it's about luxury marketing through scarcity. wine-searcher.com/m/2026/10/…

Interesting, complex story about media suppression. As a working journalist, one thing I take from it is that these journalists didn't see themselves as part of a larger company. But they were deluding themselves. SHOULD they have been independent? Maybe. But they weren't.
This investigation in @TheNation about the downfall of Scientific American presents a neat parallel to the question of whether the downfall of the transgender rights movement can be blamed on its political excesses prompting a backlash, on cynical rightwing exploitation, or a combination of both. After @SciAm became nakedly leftwing in recent years under Laura Helmuth (who posted scathingly about Trump supporters after the 2024 election results came in and was pressured to resign), this attracted the ire of the Trump administration, which in turn put pressure on its corporate owner, which ultimately offloaded the company to a small firm, which proceeded to gut the magazine. Would none of this have happened had SciAm stuck strictly to the science and not come out swinging in the left-wing approach to the culture wars? We'll never know. thenation.com/article/societ…

It's not clear to me that Scientific American needed an ongoing commentary section. Science is supposed to be about facts, not opinions. Many of the Trump administration's anti-science actions should be criticized. But, editorials about Gaza? Really?

Interesting lawsuit. Like most North Americans, I'd like to see our trade war with Canada end. But will this do it? I'm curious to see a court respond to the argument that a 96-year-old law is a "relic" that has been "superseded by modern trade laws." newser.com/story/398564/food…

Meanwhile, I just got an email from the official Australian Wine promotional agency saying sales of Aussie wine were up 14% Canada-wide and 17.9% in Ontario. Once you lose a customer, you may never win them back.
