I spoke to @nytimes about why the destruction of land in south Lebanon matters as much as the destruction of homes. Israel has leveled 48 of about 60 villages there, and fires and bulldozers have wiped out thousands of acres of olive groves and farmland. nytimes.com/interactive/2026…

With OSINT comes ethics and great responsibility. A reminder for anyone doing geolocation work: the person filming is never the subject. We don't publish their position, we don't assume their affiliation, and we don't invite an army to act on it. This post does all three.

“Could you see if my home is still standing?” For @newlinesmag, I write about how satellite imagery became one of the only ways Palestinians could see what remained of home. I spoke to four, two from Rafah, about what these images show and leave out. newlinesmag.com/first-person…

If reports are accurate that the explosives seized at Dahr el-Baydar were discovered only after the truck carrying them overturned, this hardly comes as a surprise. The possibility of an assassination is alarming enough. But a more fundamental question remains: what does it mean to live in a country where the state either cannot or will not prevent explosives from being moved across its territory? Materials that could be detonated, by design, sabotage, or accident, almost anywhere. The Beirut port explosion was the most devastating illustration of the dangers inherent in such a political order. Six years later, despite all the solemn statements and oaths, Lebanon remains a society condemned to perpetual anxiety.

Satellite maps can hide a lot. A fake forest covers a military base in Russia, another covers a government area in South Korea. So I published a video on the free tools you can use to check edits and trust satellite imagery. Link below 👇

On Monday, Google Maps updated its images of Gaza, giving the public a stark visual record of the destruction that has been ongoing since October 2023. The update for parts of Gaza shows just how complex OSINT verification has become. 1/5

Fourteen years ago, a video was posted to YouTube, showing Austin Tice, an American journalist who had been abducted in Syria being dragged up a mountainside. We've geolocated it next to a Syrian military site, visually confirming it was the regime who took him. 🧵

Beirut is plunging into a hellscape of lawlessness. After frequent shootings, rising theft, and days with no electricity, a new trend: rocks thrown from highways onto passing cars. The latest killed someone yesterday, another hospitalized a driver today. The state remains absent.

Since 2025, @ThomasBordeaux7 and I have supported a BBC investigation into Austin Tice’s kidnapping. It’s published in the podcast: “Where is Austin Tice.” Key points of Ep. 4 were published as an article. It proves that the regime planned the abduction. tinyurl.com/y344mx2a

Yesterday, the UK Foreign Secretary, Ed Miliband, announced sanctions against illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank. In July, CIR reported on a number of incidents involving settler violence in and around the village of Tell, in the occupied West Bank. Since then, CIR has monitored a rise in incidents across the Nablus Governorate, many involving violence and destruction of Palestinian communities. 1/6 xitter.cf/Cen4infoRes/status/208…
On 24 July 2026, [WARNING: GRAPHIC] footage began circulating on social media appearing to show a shooting involving armed Israeli settlers and Palestinian civilians in the village of Tell, in the occupied West Bank. In the days that followed, further footage emerged of settler violence in neighbouring villages, alongside statements from Israeli officials calling for a forceful response. CIR has verified a number of these incidents, here’s what we found👇. [Source: Instagram @i_am_the_shadow]

New from @hrw and Harvard Law's International Human Rights Clinic: a report on white phosphorus and the loophole in international law that keeps it lawful. It draws on whitephosphorus.info, the archive from my PhD, now at 286 strikes in south Lebanon, October 2023 to May 2026

In October the UN General Assembly's First Committee sits in New York for a month of disarmament talks. The report urges governments to put white phosphorus on the agenda there, since the treaty body that holds Protocol III moves only by consensus and has stalled for years. 2/3

Worth reading in full. It sets out the medical evidence, the drafting history that produced the loophole, and what a stronger prohibition would have to say. Full report: hrw.org/sites/default/files/… 3/3
