Super interesting read, nautil.us/to-supercharge-lea…. Really what [we] need to learn, they told us, are the “6 C’s”: 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐨́𝐧, 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐨́𝐧, content, critical thinking, creative innovation, 𝐲 confidence." That's what we want to do @weevelanguages

Don't even try to remember the vocabulary when learning a new language. Just keep moving on, listening and reading, and eventually the words will start to stick. ow.ly/EAke50Knwsn

Heard a language teacher say the reason why sometimes subtitles don’t match the audio is because they want there to be less words on the screen to read… MY MIND IS BLOWN
This makes sense but as a language learner this is annoying 😭😭😭

And in both cases the answer is
1. Just wait until you understand it clearly enough from getting lots of exposure
2. Don't worry about it

I got this book this evening from one of the diglot.ie/ team. Their approach to language acquisition is to weave words from the language you want to learn into classic texts. I am trying to get better at Irish so will give this a go. @DiglotSocial

I've nothing against people using apps in order to learn a language
I just ward beginners away from them because for some reason people think that's all they have to do
You ain't gonna learn how to understand and speak a language exclusively from an app
IMPOSSIBLE

Learning from school textbooks as a beginner made me able to say “where is my blue suitcase?” in French as a beginner.
Learning from comprehensible input on topics I’m interested in made me able to talk about user experience design in Hungarian as a beginner.

The best thing about immersion learning a language is when you suddenly pull something out of your head you didn’t even know you knew, like it’s just sunk in in the background and then it just spills out of your mouth

Stop confusing "Comprehensible Input" to mean "a specific concept that can be understood the first time you see it".
You can learn something from seeing it a second time in a new context where you didn't understand it the first time, including /because/ you saw it the first time.

We underestimate how much listening helps us learn! Last week I learnt "it depends" in Hungarian. I forgot it soon, of course. Today my tutor told me again. It was familiar, but I still didn't remember. Then tonight I heard it in a song. Now I finally feel like I won't forget it!
