Voter registration indicates that if all North Carolina residents voted like those from New York, Republicans would not hold a single statewide office As of 1/1/2026, NC-born registered voters narrowly favor the GOP 33.6%-33.0% For New Yorkers, it's 34.4% Democrat to 26.2% GOP​ Immigrants favor the Democrat party even more strongly, with 32.5% of foreign-born voters registered as Democrat and only 20.5% registered as Republican This is balanced by voters with an American birth place other than NC or NY, with 30.8% Republican and 27.5% Democrat Including New York, transplants from three out of the top ten non-NC states for registrations favor Democrats: - New York (34.4-26.2) - New Jersey (32.3-27.8) - South Carolina (36.9-27.8) While the other seven favor Republicans: - Virginia (31.7-26.9) - Pennsylvania (35.7-29.1) - Florida (33.0-25.8) - California (31.1-26.0) - Ohio (33.9-23.7) - Georgia (31.3-27.8) - Illinois (28.7-26.0) Despite the fact that New Yorkers in our state prefer Democrats and significantly outnumber any other state of origin, American transplants among the NC electorate are 30.2% registered Republican and 28.5% Democrat However, it should be kept in mind that the utility of analyzing political leaning based on voter registration is reduced by two factors: over a third of voters are not registered to either party, and approximately a quarter of registered voters do not have a birth place listed in their record
