在其后的发行使用中也衍生出许多弊端，最大的问题是滥发——即没有“发行准备金”，至于面额大小却不是关键，因为新交子最初实际只有两种面额——五贯（2/10）与十贯（8/10），均面额过大，不利于小额交易，其后有改为一贯半贯（6:4）。

纸币的雏形“交子”最初为私人商户发行（但有取得官府认可和保护），无固定面额，更接近于“无记名可流通支票”，发行后因“数致争讼”被政府“取缔”；公元1024年1月12日，第一个纸币发行机构——益州交子务——设立，发行固定票面的新交子，并需要“备本钱”。
