Prohibiting chalking just feels so unreal to me. (Is my alma mater showing?)
Harvard will adopt University-wide rules on the use of campus spaces that prohibit overnight camping, chalking on University property, and unapproved signage, according to a draft document obtained by The Crimson.
@tillyrobin and @neilhshah15 report.

I had apparently missed the renaming of Wilder House earlier this year.
In a move that more fully acknowledges Smith’s history, three college houses have been named in honor of staff and alums who have contributed to positive social change—both on campus and beyond the Grecourt Gates. smith.edu/news-events/news/h…

Tell Congress: The government should not have the power to decide what topics are "safe" online for young people, and to force services to remove and block access to anything that might be considered unsafe for children. This isn’t safety—it’s censorship. act.eff.org/action/tell-cong…

So many great ideas in this @siminevazire interview.
1) Requiring code, data, and materials to be publicly available.
2) Encouraging scrutiny of published papers.
3) Making the peer-review history public.

my attempt to give my students some guidance without ending up on a watchlist 💀

ALT A slightly more eloquent version of what I told my philosophy students tonight: Now's a great time to use those critical thinking skills we've been working on! (1) Don't believe everything you see on social media. There's a LOT of mis- and disinformation out there. Check sources. Wait for confirmation. (2) Listen carefully for how people are grouped together. Who says "Palestinians" when they should say "Hamas"? Who conflates Israeli leadership with Israeli people? Who blames Jews or Muslims en masse? (2)(a) Who "dies" and who "is killed"? Who is a "civilian," who is an "enemy," who is "collateral damage"? (3) Who wants to shut down thinking and questions and instead rush into action? What actions and why?

Powerful people using sexism as a shield :(
I'm sure Gino & Cuddy are targets of sexism & worse. But scholarly criticism of their work, eg Data Colada's, isn't sexism. Saying it is undermines efforts to combat actual sexism & erodes our field's credibility by silencing criticism.
Replying to @stephaniemlee
Hard to condense (you can read the story for free), but Gino says she was treated unfairly by Harvard's investigation and by Data Colada, in part because of gender. She says Data Colada has “targeted the work of prominent female academics,” e.g. Amy Cuddy. chronicle.com/article/schola…

Capitalism actually inhibits tech innovation & prevents its greatest possible uses…

I'm thrilled to announce that when I reached back out to the senior fact checker to raise substantive "factual, legal, and historical inaccuracies", the response was simply: "I understand that the author's perspective is controversial." So that's the @NewYorker now.

I see our country's addiction to defunding things that actually keep us safe and diverting that money to cops instead is going well.
Important thread.
