Kanye West refused a second year of art school loans that would have cost another $8,000 to $15,000. By the time Charlie Rose interviewed him in 2005 his album The College Dropout had already sold 2.5 million copies and pulled 10 Grammy nominations.
He walked in with a platinum plaque as a producer and a Columbia deal already on the table. His mother put him on $200 a month rent the day he dropped out. The first big beat he sold brought $8,000. The 2002 car crash that wired his jaw shut became the record that finally made Roc-A-Fella sign him as a rapper instead of just a producer.
In the video below he tells Charlie Rose why he walked away from the loans. He says high school is necessary and college is a choice, and that most people sign the debt before they even know what they want.
One side says he left a cheap degree on the table. The other says the loans would have chained him to payments while the music money was already moving.
Was skipping the extra $15,000 in student loans the move that made him, or just the one that looked smart after the album hit?

A man found a neglected Ferrari F430 through an estate sale, complete with its original $187,000 window sticker, then accepted an $85,000 cash offer after initially asking for $100,000 😳🏎️💰
“I would like $100 grand for the car.”
“We were thinking like $80,000. I’ll do $85,000 and go to the bank right now.”
“Okay, done.”

Flying is atrocious now. Just drive if its within 500 miles. Even with TSA Pre and Clear you have to walk through a Star Wars cantina of people on speaker phone and Cookie Monster pjs. The lounges aren't much better. I always end up seated next to a 300 lb hambeast. Why bother?

Cody Campbell’s board seat at Texas Tech is in jeopardy.
In Texas, the governor appoints university board members. Governor-elect Gina Hinojosa, a Democrat, could replace Campbell, a Trump ally and one of the most outspoken voices in college sports.

The richest man in the world in the 1960s said the way back from $0 starts with 1 uncomfortable step. It's free, it takes no skill, and most people would rather stay broke than take it.
Aristotle Onassis said that if he ever went flat broke, he wouldn't look for a job or a loan. He would go wherever wealthy people gather, a restaurant, a club, a yacht club, and simply sit in the same room with them. No meetings, no pitching, not even a conversation. Kevin Trudeau says Onassis learned it inside a secret society.
The reason sounds strange, until you remember how Walt Disney started.
Disney was flat broke when he started telling people he was going to build a city. He couldn't even pay his rent. To anyone listening, it made no sense: a man behind on rent, describing a whole city of his own. That city became Disneyland.
That's what Onassis would have been after in those rooms. Sit long enough near people who think in big numbers, and your own idea of what's possible starts to stretch. But a big dream and a dream world are different things: one builds Disneyland, the other just makes you delusional. So the room has to be full of people who have actually made money, not people who only talk about it.
The plan was never about getting a seat at their table, only about being close enough to hear how they think.
Somewhere tonight, a broke 24-year-old is nursing a $6 coffee in a 5-star hotel lobby, listening to strangers talk about deals worth millions.
Find your lobby this week, and save this post for the day you need the push.
