Heartbroken over today’s horrific attack on a church in Jordan.
Extremists opened fire during a funeral, killing 7 and injuring 34. The victims were extended family members of a dear friend of mine.
Jordan is often considered one of the safest countries for Christians in the Middle East. Praying for the grieving families, the injured, and the Christian community shaken by this senseless violence.

If you're single and looking, your regular life should be able to offer you ample opportunities to meet the opposite sex
If you're a woman this means don't just go to and from work, pilates, and brunch with the girls
If you're a man this means leaving the house for things other than going to your buddy's house with 5 other guys
The ways you see the opposite sex should allow for low-stakes, repeat exposure that is NOT exclusively romantic in nature
This doesn't mean you can never go to speed dating events, but it does mean those are usually a lot of pressure with rare payoff
A sample of ideas:
-Run clubs
-Social dancing
-Church (specifically small groups/house churches/Bible studies)
-Co-ed rec leagues - volleyball, pickleball, kickball, etc
-Hiking groups (start or join an @ACC_National branch!)
-Virtually any volunteer work
-Crossfit (other workout classes are fine but rarely as social)
-Young professional groups (these are shockingly well-attended and repeat-attended where I live)
-Community theater or choirs
-Campaign volunteering or your local Young Republicans
-Alumni clubs
-Climbing gyms
I'm not telling you to "be best friends first!" but you do need to have a way of getting to know someone that's lower pressure and allows them to see your good side before just making a call at face value
And again: the WHOLE POINT is to not just do this to meet a partner, your life should involve some kind of socialization naturally, which is where partners come from
Forcing it rarely pans out well

We spend a lot of time debating what these systems are, which is fine, but we shouldn't forget ourselves.
The research on venting has not been kind to the punching-bag theory. People who hit a punching bag while stewing come out angrier, not calmer.
Character is built out of repetitions. Whatever you practice on a chatbot, you're the one practicing.
It’s easy to mock cities and towns that did this (there are a bunch of them!) but I think a degree of humility is warranted: their leaders were watching themselves and their peers decline, saw nothing positive ahead for the old downtown model, and took a bold swing to try to avert the crises that urban decline can bring. There’s something intensely admirable about that; it’s a spirit of action you don’t really see from government today.
Most of the malls failed, of course, and sixty years on the world has changed enough that Main Street urban fabric is valued again, but it’s not really clear that the mall cities lost much more of it than their peers that sat back and took the decline without changing course.

I am more and more convinced that all these apps which claim to make learning fast and easy are actually doing the opposite: making it very hard for anyone to actually learn.
The struggle is the learning.
Anything that takes the struggle out is taking the learning with it.
It’s like buying a device to make weightlifting light and easy. The point is for it to be heavy and hard.
Of course, there is a difference between purposeful, productive struggle and chaotic, destructive struggle, but that’s a different topic.

TIL that "meteorological fall" is arbitrarily defined as September 1 instead of "when summer temperatures cease", which would be regional and based in embodied reality rather than arbitrary definitions, which is what I meant in this context.

I’m convinced that the Instagram algorithm for women is designed by Screwtape.
“Now tell the women they deserve MORE than to look after their children, that their children are a BURDEN and they should have days of nothing but leisure”
“Show her all the ways her husband is failing and never let her appreciate a good thing about him”
“Tell her she has no power over demons and drugs. No agency, no will. Tell her she’s just a victim of circumstance!”

The numbers here are insane:
In the L.A. Metro system, 97% of people who committed a violent crime evaded the fare. In D.C., 99.5% of those who committed a “Part 1” crime (homicide, rape, robbery, arson, or motor vehicle theft) had dodged the fare.
In New York, MTA CEO Janno Lieber says that “virtually all” crimes are committed by fare evaders.
Last November, Lawrence Reed poured gasoline on a CTA Blue Line passenger in Chicago and set her on fire.
Reed had been arrested 72 times.
There's a way to prevent crimes like this, in addition to keeping these violent criminals in jail: installing full-height fare gates, which keep criminals out of transit systems.
