My better half Matt St. John and I wrote a blog for Bordwell & Thompson’s @ObserOnFilmArt, responding to a Variety column that blamed audiences for neglecting art house films. We dispute this with a look at current trends in indie distribution/exhibition. davidbordwell.net/blog/2024/…

Feels premature to say that the Trump Era is over. But the Nothing Matters Era is. The political arena really has shifted, not just in the last year but the last ten. We have agency. We can work, we can strategize, and we can build. We aren't helpless, many things are possible.

Whatever happened with this
Politico: Centrist Democrats are sounding the alarm that a surging democratic socialist mayoral candidate in New York City’s Tuesday primary could further set back the party’s already beleaguered national brand.
Third Way, the center-left Democratic think tank, wrote in a memo Friday that they are “deeply alarmed” by Zohran Mamdani, whom they argue holds positions “that border on anti-semitism” and scan as if they were “cooked up in the offices of a Trump-aligned ad maker.”

It is my honor and privilege to be headed to the US Senate to serve the great state of Michigan.
Michigan, we did what they said couldn’t be done. We won. Together. Now the real work begins.

SIR PATRICK STEWART (1940-2026)
Before everything else, Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire, the proud county in the north of England which he loved to the end. You could hear it in his accented voice and in the stern honesty with which he told you what he thought and felt. Yorkshiremen have no truck with half-truths or avoidance of big issues. He wore his heart on his sleeve, which made him a man to rely on, to admire and in my case, love.
We first met as ambitious young actors with the Royal Shakespeare Company half a century ago but we weren’t in the same productions. My first strong memory was a few years later, meeting him in the street in central London when he told me about an offer to take over a leading part in 'Star Trek'. “But Patrick think of your stage career in the UK. Do you really want to risk—getting lost in Hollywood for years and years?”. Well, he took the risk and thank goodness for us all that he did for not just his devoted Trekkies but film and theatre audiences, who marvelled at his using international celebrity to star in a string of cinema successes ('X-Men' of course) and in great classical plays by Shakespeare, Ibsen, Arthur Miller, Peter Shaffer, Pinter and Beckett at Stratford-upon-Avon, in London’s West End and on Broadway.
America was his adopted home, where he met his adored Sunny who has cared for him through sickness and health, through thick and thin. But he never forsook his origins: and the proudest achievement of the most respected and beloved actor of his generation on either side of the Atlantic, was his appointment as Chancellor of Huddersfield University in Yorkshire.
His farewell performance in 'Avengers: Doomsday' is yet to be seen.

I visited @cornellsun students at their office last night — and talked with them about the campus rape case they've been investigating for 23 months, and the decision to publish the names of the seven men involved in the lawsuit on their front page. nytimes.com/2026/09/29/nyreg…

When we criticize oligarchy, what we're really criticizing is the ability of a 43-year-old failson, who did nothing to earn the $200 billion he is set to inherit, to unilaterally impose his will on the AGs of a dozen states including California and New York.

Nearly every day toward the end of my tenure at The Washington Post, someone would complain to me about Jeff Bezos' changes. His decimation of the local news team. His abandonment of DC sports coverage. The shriveled Bezos opinion page, with the ideological diversity of a doorknob.
Today, The Washington Sun launches. It has made enormous new investments: +110 newsroom staff; DC's legendary food columnist; truly the best DMV reporters; a beloved weather blog; a growing roster of columnists; tons of worldclass reporters across many national beats; and also me.
The Washington Sun will not be perfect. We will write stories that you find annoying, dumb, or misinformed. I will make mistakes (& tell me if I do - [email protected]!). But at a time where investments in reporting are evaporating, I'm so excited The Sun is hiring real journalists doing real reporting.
If you want to help, I would love if you signed up for our (free!) newsletters, which routinely get genuinely rave reviews:

Some personal news: This is my last week at The Washington Post.
I’ve loved so much of the last 9 years here, but my faith in the paper’s current leadership is broken beyond repair.
Incredibly excited to get to work with the newsroom below (I start in June) & join the extraordinarily talented kickass reporters such as @anna_c_kramer, @OrianaBeLike, @reesejgorman & many more

Very apt for the DHS to try to repurpose a video about a penguin losing his mind and heading toward inevitable suicide and make it about the path America is on.
