Kelly Shields was driving on Route 50 in late August when she saw a car smashed all the way to the steering wheel, with the driver unconscious. She immediately pulled over and checked for the man’s pulse before removing him from the smoking car. Shields, of Arnold, then called 911 and started asking him questions as he slowly gained consciousness. The Broadneck High School senior is working toward her certified nursing assistant and certified clinical medical assistant certifications at the Center of Applied Technology South. For her actions that day, she received citations from Democratic Gov. Wes Moore, the Anne Arundel County Council, the county Board of Education and the county police department at the Wednesday school board meeting.
