Two leftist Marxist students celebrating the Islamic Revolution in Tehran, 1979.
Sahar Mohammadi (left) and Maryam Rafiei (right).
Maryam Rafiei was later executed by the same regime in the 1988 prison massacres, along with thousands of other leftist political activists.
The revolution ate its own.
They hated the Shah of Iran so much that they cheered Khomeini’s arrival, convinced the revolution would bring freedom and modernity.

We should all be disturbed by the ugliness increasingly imposed upon our society: the desecration of sacred spaces, the blasphemy of God, the degradation of art, and the disfigurement of our institutions. Yet we have become so saturated in vulgarity and grotesquery that we scarcely recognize them anymore.
Julia’s response is that of a healthy soul—one that reveres God and His creation, recognizes beauty, and longs for a world shaped by goodness and order.
These grotesque “art exhibits” should offend our deepest moral and aesthetic sensibilities. Our inability to recognize ugliness is not a sign of enlightenment, but of how profoundly desensitized we have become.
We laugh at these works for their absurdity (rightly so), but beneath that laughter should be a profound sorrow for how vulgar and debased our culture has become.
A civilization that loses its reverence for beauty eventually loses its ability to recognize what is worth preserving.
