🎁HBT Jonathan Sessler (@JLsessler), who turns 70 today. He is most famous for his work on expanded #porphyrins, including texaphyrins. A native of Urbana, Illinois, he studied chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley (@UCBerkeley) and at Stanford University (@Stanford), where he received his PhD in 1982 for work on porphyrin chemistry with James P. Collman. After a postdoc with Jean-Marie Lehn in Strasbourg and a short stint in Iwao Tabushi’s group at the University of Kyoto (@KyotoU_News), Sessler began his independent career in 1984 at the University of Texas at Austin (@UTAustin), where he currently holds the Doherty–Welch Chair. His work on #porphyrinoids and #supramolecular chemistry, as well as on medicinal chemistry, has earned him many honors, including the Centenary Award of the RSC (@RoySocChem) and the ACS (@AmerChemSociety) Breslow Award in Biomimetic Chemistry. He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (@theNASciences) and a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (@CAS__Science). Sessler himself suffered from #cancer, and he used his expertise to develop biologically active anti-cancer compounds, which also led him to found several companies. Jonathan Sessler is a gifted teacher who has mentored over 250 PhD students and postdocs. He has served the scientific community in manifold ways, as editor of books and journals and as organizer of conferences. We wish him well for a healthy and fruitful future. #porphyrin #SupramolecularChemistry #MedicinalChemistry #BiomimeticChemistry #anticancer #AnticancerCompounds
