In this anthology is a paper Cian Westmorland and I wrote to shed some light on the systems connecting US #drone operations to a complex sociotechnical framework developed for network centric warfare. We call it the #KillCloud. It’s available free here👇🏼

Uh oh.
“Five of the biggest US tech giants are carrying $1.65 trillion in debt that does not show up on their balance sheets, more than the debt that does. It is bankrolling the AI data-centre boom, it is perfectly legal, and it uses the same accounting trick that brought down Enron.”

The AI sprint is hurtling to a world where a small number of billionaires - without accountability or consequences- controls the information that flows to world at scale.
This is a world in which trust, empathy, creativity, and love - behaviors that are central to what it means to be human - must burn even more brightly so as to push back the darkness.

Thanks to the Integrity Media Group (@integmediagroup) for bringing together independent journalists, organizations, lawyers and whistleblowers (including myself and @ColeenRowley) and creating the space to pause, recognize and celebrate their collective work, commitment, exposures and even sacrifice in holding up a mirror in the public interest, despite the risks, to the use and abuse of power, in all forms and across all sectors of society, across the US and even the world. @unfetterdspeech
As I result of our invited participation at this recent event, Coleen and I co-wrote an article together that was published by @Consortiumnews.
We agree that integrity in media is possible and that both integrity and media can independently co-exist together as eyewitnesses to history, with whistleblowers as key sources of uncomfortable truths.
We also assert that restoring public trust in journalism requires evidence-led reporting, editorial independence, full transparency, as well as meaningful protections for whistleblowers.
The 2026 Integrity Media Awards demonstrated that press freedom and the protection of sources and press freedom is a collective democratic and civic responsibility shared by independent sources, journalists, editors, podcasters, influencers, lawyers, and publishers, while also truly informing the readers under the precious rights of unfettered free speech and expression increasingly under attack and suppression.

So wonder why more people don’t speak up against wrongdoing and abuse of power?
Just ask the whistleblowers and the truth tellers.

Dear Nick @So8res
I'm reminded of parallels to events in the evangelical religious community.
In the mid-1800s, followers of William Millera quit their jobs and sold all their possessions, in anticipation of the imminent arrival of the rapture on October 22, 1944. Needless to day that did not happen, leading to what is called The Great Disappointment. By the way, it is from that failure that the Seventh Day Adventists were born (among other things, they thought Miller was mostly right, but that his date calculation was wrong).
Then, there were the Shakers - formally named The United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing - who also shaped their lives in anticipation of the Second Coming. As a side note, there are at this moment only two Shakers living; seems that their vows of celibacy had some consequences unanticipated when that event didn't manifest.
Jehovah's Witnesses similarly have predicted Armageddon, first expecting it to take place in 1914, then in 1975, and then as they accounted in 1989, sometime before the end of the 20th century. Now, their belief systems is simply that it is imminent but they don't have a specific date.
Finally, we have Heaven's Gate, whose members were certain that aliens following the Hale-Bopp comet were coming to bring them to a next level of existence. As you may recall, all 39 of them committed suicide.
What shall we name the event to which you ascribe? I can't decide among The Last Inference, The Final Descent, or - my current favorite - the Crapture?
In short, Nick, I strongly urge you to reconsider your life choices.
.@So8res thinks it’s more likely than not AI will wipe out humanity by 2036. How does that belief affect his choices in life? He doesn’t save for retirement, but beyond that, he says, “I sort of do what I can and then I live a good life.”
We talked through all the ways we should try to lower those odds. Watch here: youtube.com/watch?v=n8xpeNhj…

🚀 WHEN REALITY COLLIDES WITH INSTITUTIONAL SELF-PROTECTION
After the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded in January 1986, killing all seven crew members, Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman was appointed to the presidential Rogers Commission.
He could have lent his prestige to the process and stayed within the established channels.
He didn’t.
🔎 Feynman went around management and talked directly to the engineers and technicians who knew the hardware.
What he found was devastating.
Engineers had warned that the solid rocket booster O-rings became dangerously stiff in freezing temperatures. The warnings were known. The risk was real. Yet schedule pressure and institutional confidence repeatedly prevailed.
Even more disturbing was the gap between how management perceived risk and how the engineers closest to the system understood it.
Then Feynman did something brilliant.
🧊 During a televised hearing, he placed a piece of O-ring material in ice water and demonstrated that at low temperature it failed to recover properly.
In seconds, physical reality cut through layers of institutional language.
But Feynman wasn’t finished.
When his conclusions risked being softened or marginalized in the final report, he reportedly made clear that he would not allow his name to legitimize a document that excluded his findings.
His assessment became Appendix F.
And he ended it with words every leader, investigator, inspector, engineer—and whistleblower—should remember:
⚠️ “For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for nature cannot be fooled.”
That lesson reaches far beyond NASA.
When organizations begin treating uncomfortable facts as problems to manage, rather than warnings to confront, institutional self-protection can become more important than truth.
🚨 Reputation cannot override evidence.
🚨 Hierarchy cannot change reality.
🚨 Consensus does not make something true.
🚨 And suppressing the messenger does not eliminate the underlying problem.
Sometimes accountability requires one person willing to go around the bureaucracy, listen to the people closest to the problem, put the evidence on the table—and refuse to let it be buried.
Truth does not become less true because an institution finds it inconvenient.

1/ NEW REPORT: Billions of advertising auctions determine in real time which ads we see on websites and in apps every day. Our latest research shows how the same data fueling this advertising ecosystem is being used to profile millions of users and silently infect targets with zero-click mercenary spyware, a novel attack technique we call "Adfection.”

Researcher @timnitGebru says Silicon Valley discourse about the supposed "existential risks" of artificial intelligence is part of a ploy to avoid regulation of the industry.
"OpenAI could have been held liable for unleashing malware around the world, hacking Hugging Face, hacking all sorts of government agencies, but instead of doing that and holding them accountable for unsafe security practices … they managed to redirect the conversation to some type of unprecedented rogue machines that don’t exist."

Let’s be very clear: there is value in automating tedious and repetitive and dangerous tasks; there is value in delegating certain work to our machines that can do the work tirelessly and much faster.
But at the same time, let us remember that there is value in the activity of engaging one’s mind and body to discover, to understand, to create, and yes, even to struggle and overcome. Indeed, these are some of the things that make us human, that contribute to giving us meaning, that are part of the simple joy of experiencing being alive.
