Lughaya, Somaliland 📍 Deegaankii Geela Badda ayaa hadda isku biirsaday deegaannada Geela iyo Kalluunka. Waa deegaan caan ku ah kolonyooyin (fadhiisimo/xeerooyin caan ah) geel ah oo tiradoodu boqollaal gaadhayso. Hore, waxa la aaminsanaa in qofka caba caanaha geela, dabadeedna cuna kalluunka, ay maqaarkiisa ka soo baxaan finan u eg isha kalluunka. Arrintaas awgeed, dadka deegaanku aad bay uga baqi jireen isku cunista caanaha geela iyo kalluunka. Hadda, suuqa kalluunka ee Boorama waxa la wareegtay Lughaya, oo hore ula tartami jirtay Berbera dhinaca kalluunka suuqa la keeno. Somaliland’s Ambassador to Ethiopia Initiates Diplomatic Engagements Somaliland’s Ambassador to Ethiopia has initiated his diplomatic engagements by meeting with his Ethiopian counterpart, H.E. Ambassador Teshome Shunde, at the Ethiopian Mission in Somaliland. The meeting focused on strengthening the longstanding relations between Somaliland and Ethiopia, with both sides emphasising the importance of mutual respect, trust and continued cooperation between their two peoples.
It was a true pleasure to be received by my brother, H.E. Amb. Teshome Shunde, at the Ethiopian Mission in Somaliland. I sincerely thank you, Ambassador, and the sisterly Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia for your warmth and encouraging wishes as I begin my assignment in Addis Ababa. The strength of relations between nations rests not on geography alone, but on the mutual respect and trust cultivated by those who steward them. I am honored to carry that responsibility forward, and I look forward to working hand in hand to further strengthen the enduring bonds of friendship between our two nations and peoples.

Burco vs Borama Burco University vs Camuud University. Camuud University was surpassed, as they competed in the modernization of logistics services. Burco University introduced a service that provides the customer with confidence and security, and that leaves a lasting record by which the vehicle they used can be identified if something happens to that individual.
Arabs are increasingly, and surprisingly, studying and learning about Somaliland more objectively, while expressing its history and political context with greater accuracy and fairness. I have rarely seen Arab media provide such a balanced discussion of Somaliland as this episode by Mustafa Guri, a Sudanese YouTuber on Alaraby Tube, a Qatari media platform. The presentation was well structured, academically informed, and reflected the work of several researchers rather than relying on simplified political narratives. Some of the key points he highlighted include: - Somaliland is not simply a breakaway region or a conventional secessionist movement. It was an independent and sovereign state in 1960 before restoring its sovereignty in 1991. This historical background distinguishes Somaliland from many separatist movements, as it had previously existed as a recognized sovereign entity. - The British Somaliland Protectorate maintained a relatively strong system of local governance through traditional institutions and domestic structures under British oversight, while Italian Somaliland experienced a more centralized colonial administration with stronger direct control over local affairs. There was no fully completed or formally ratified Act of Union between the two newly independent states. The unification process was largely based on political agreement, nationalist sentiment, and mutual aspirations rather than a comprehensive constitutional and legally ratified framework. - The motivation behind unification was primarily driven by Somali nationalism and the aspiration to unite Somali-inhabited territories under one state. However, the two sides had different expectations regarding the structure, objectives, and future direction of the union. - The 1961 military coup attempt by officers from Somaliland reflected the early emergence of serious disagreements regarding the union and demonstrated the existence of different political visions between the two former states. - The military government in Somalia later introduced an increasingly centralized and authoritarian system of governance, which intensified grievances in Somaliland, increased feelings of political marginalization, and contributed to the rise of armed opposition. - The government's response relied heavily on military force. What initially began as demands for political reform, representation, and equal treatment gradually developed into wider questions about the legitimacy and purpose of the union itself after the repeated use of force against civilians. - Africa Watch documented the scale of destruction, the extensive use of military force, and serious human rights violations committed against civilians during the conflict. - In 1991, representatives of liberation movements, traditional elders, and community leaders gathered in Burao and decided to dissolve the union and restore Somaliland’s sovereignty based on its 1960 statehood. - This decision was not sudden or improvised, but rather the result of a long historical and political process. - Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland, gradually rebuilt and developed functioning state institutions. Over time, Somaliland achieved a level of political stability, governance, and institutional development that contrasted sharply with the political trajectory of internationally recognized Somalia. - Somaliland has achieved a level more advanced then just a de facto recognition and international engagement, though not formal diplomatic recognition. It has gained increasing attention, respect, and practical cooperation, while official recognition remains limited, partly due to the African Union’s cautious approach toward altering inherited colonial borders. - Many countries recognize Somaliland’s practical governance capacity and cooperate with it in areas such as counterterrorism, anti-piracy efforts, maritime security, regional stability, trade, and development. These relationships demonstrate substantial engagement despite the absence of formal recognition. - The discussion also addressed the Somaliland–Ethiopia Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) - The Recognition of Somaliland by Israel, including their wider regional and geopolitical implications. A well-deserved hats off to Mustafa Guri and Alaraby Tube for this work a rare and valuable effort to present Somaliland’s history and political reality with greater objectivity, academic depth, and accuracy.

𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐖𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐨𝐧: 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧, 𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐢𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐧 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 Somaliland's relationship with the United States has developed into an increasingly visible foreign-policy issue in Washington. Both Republicans and Democrats have engaged with Somaliland, but their approaches differ on the question of independence and formal recognition. 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡: 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐜 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 Republican engagement has increasingly shifted toward explicit advocacy for Somaliland’s right to self-determination and recognition, focusing on the strategic benefits of separating Washington's Somaliland policy from its engagements in Mogadishu. This approach emphasizes Somaliland's role as a reliable security and economic partner that directly opposes Chinese influence in the region. Key Legislative and Diplomatic Examples: - H.R. 3992 – Republic of Somaliland Independence Act (2025): Introduced by Representative Scott Perry (R-PA), this bill explicitly proposed to authorize the U.S. government to formally recognize Somaliland as a sovereign and independent nation. - H.R. 7993 – Somaliland Economic Access and Opportunity Act: A legislative initiative attributed to Representative John Rose (R-TN), focused on providing Somaliland direct financial, trade, and international banking access independent of Somalia. - Congressional Delegations (CODELs) to Hargeisa: Senior Republican members, including Representative Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Representative Scott Perry (R-PA), have led influential oversight delegations to Hargeisa and Berbera, assessing maritime security, counterterrorism, and port infrastructure to lay the groundwork for a separate bilateral partnership. - Countering Chinese Influence & National Security: Prominent Republicans, such as Representatives Chris Smith and John Moolenaar, have highlighted Somaliland as a crucial check on China’s growing presence in the Red Sea. They called for a separate U.S. travel advisory for Somaliland and direct engagement to secure vital maritime routes in the Gulf of Aden. - FY2024 State & Foreign Operations Appropriations Directives: Republican leaders on the House Appropriations Committee authored report language encouraging the State Department to evaluate diplomatic and security engagement options in Somaliland separately from Mogadishu. 𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡: 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 Democratic engagement has generally focused on practical cooperation, regional stability and development, without necessarily supporting formal recognition. Key areas include: - Security and counterterrorism cooperation. - Democratic governance and peaceful elections. - Trade, investment and economic development. - Humanitarian assistance and regional stability. - Senate Sponsorship of the Somaliland Partnership Act: Key Democratic Senators including Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) co-sponsored and advanced Senate initiatives requiring formal U.S. reporting and feasibility studies on deepening direct security and maritime ties with Somaliland. - NDAA FY2023 Security Report Mandate (Section 1275): Under Democratic committee leadership, Section 1275 was codified into the signed FY2023 National Defense Authorization Act, legally requiring the Department of Defense and State Department to submit annual feasibility reports on security partnerships with Somaliland. - High-Level USAFRICOM & Military Engagement: Executive defense leaders under Democratic administration oversight, including USAFRICOM Commander Gen. Stephen Townsend, conducted official visits to Hargeisa and Berbera Port to review tactical air, medical evacuation, and Red Sea maritime security capabilities. - Direct Diplomatic & Electoral Support: Democratic foreign policy leads push for direct USAID and State Department engagement in Somaliland, funding election observation, supporting civil society, promoting trade development, and maintaining direct diplomatic channels with Hargeisa outside of Mogadishu's central control. - House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee Hearings: Democratic committee leaders have organized formal subcommittee hearings examining Horn of Africa strategy, giving platform to discussions on expanding U.S. direct ties, educational exchanges, and commercial links with Somaliland. 𝐁𝐢𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐧 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐁𝐨𝐭𝐡 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭 The strongest evidence of cross-party cooperation comes from congressional initiatives that focus on shared American interests. When national security, Red Sea maritime protection, counterterrorism, and opposition to Chinese influence are at stake, lawmakers from both parties have repeatedly united to advance U.S.–Somaliland cooperation. Key Bipartisan Initiatives and Joint Frameworks: - Somaliland Partnership Act (S. 3861, 2022): Introduced by Republican Senator Jim Risch along with Republican Senator Mike Rounds and Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen, this landmark bipartisan legislation proposed mandatory annual reporting and a formal feasibility study on establishing a direct U.S.–Somaliland defense and maritime security partnership without requiring immediate formal recognition. - Enactment of NDAA FY2023 (Section 1275): Bipartisan leadership across both the House and Senate Armed Services Committees successfully codified the Somaliland Partnership Act's core objectives into federal law. Signed into law by President Biden, Section 1275 legally mandated the Department of Defense (DoD) and State Department to submit comprehensive annual reports on deepening security engagement with Somaliland. - House Bipartisan Diplomatic Letter (March 2022): Key foreign policy leads including Republican Representative Michael McCaul and Democratic Representative Tom Malinowski joined a broad coalition of lawmakers in an official letter urging Secretary of State Antony Blinken to expand diplomatic, economic, and security ties with Somaliland independently of Mogadishu. - Strategic National Security & Red Sea Alignment: Lawmakers across party lines consistently align on the critical geopolitical importance of the Gulf of Aden, Berbera Port, and Berbera Airport. Both Republicans and Democrats view direct cooperation with Somaliland as essential for securing vital maritime trade routes, maintaining regional stability, and countering China’s expanding military footprint in neighboring Djibouti. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐔.𝐒. 𝐆𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 The Congressional Research Service has also examined Somaliland separately in its analysis of U.S. policy towards Somalia. It recognises Somaliland's de facto self-governance while explaining Washington's continuing formal position on Somalia's territorial integrity. This distinction is important: increased engagement does not automatically mean diplomatic recognition. 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐁𝐢𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐧 𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐞 Somaliland should pursue five priorities : - Engage both parties: Build lasting relationships with Republican and Democratic lawmakers, particularly on Foreign Affairs, Armed Services and Appropriations Committees. - Lead with national security: Highlight Berbera Port, Red Sea shipping, counterterrorism and maritime security. - Promote bipartisan legislation: Encourage joint congressional initiatives, letters, hearings and policy briefings. - Strengthen institutional engagement: Work with think tanks, former diplomats, security experts and relevant U.S. government institutions. - Maintain a consistent message: Present Somaliland as a potential strategic partner whose importance to American interests deserves consideration, while continuing to make the case for recognition. 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 The distinction in Washington is clear: Republicans have been more vocal in advancing formal recognition, Democrats have generally emphasised institutional cooperation without endorsing independence, and both parties have demonstrated interest in Somaliland's strategic importance. Somaliland's long-term objective should be to move beyond partisan support and establish a sustained bipartisan relationship with the United States, grounded in national security, democratic governance, economic opportunity and regional stability.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬’ 𝐃𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐲 𝐅𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 Although the United States has not officially recognized Somaliland and still maintains the “One Somalia” policy on paper, several recent diplomatic developments suggest Washington’s position is gradually shifting in a way increasingly favorable to Somaliland. Among many indicators, these two diplomatic occasions stand out as some of the clearest signals: 𝟏. 𝐔.𝐒. 𝐃𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐈𝐬𝐫𝐚𝐞𝐥’𝐬 𝐑𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 When Somalia objected the diplomatic engagement between Israel and Somaliland and attempted to elevate the matter internationally, the United States defended Israel’s sovereign right to establish diplomatic relations with any willing partner. This was a significant diplomatic position. Washington did not frame Somaliland engagement as illegal, illegitimate, or outside accepted international conduct. Instead, the United States emphasized the principle that sovereign states are free to determine their diplomatic partnerships independently. For Somaliland, this carried an important implication: if engagement with Somaliland were fundamentally unacceptable under international norms, the United States could have opposed or discouraged such relations directly. Instead, it defended the legality and legitimacy of Israel’s freedom to pursue them. This position also strengthened the argument that diplomatic engagement with Somaliland is not outside international precedent. There is further note that many states maintain recognition policies in disputed or unresolved territorial contexts elsewhere in the world, including Palestine. From this perspective, Somaliland’s case built on decades of self-governance, stability, and functioning institutions increasingly appears compatible with established diplomatic practice. 𝟐. 𝐔.𝐒. 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐫𝐚𝐛 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝–𝐈𝐬𝐫𝐚𝐞𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 A second revealing moment came when Somaliland–Israel diplomatic engagement drew criticism from various Arab countries. Rather than endorsing that condemnation or treating Somaliland’s outreach as unacceptable, the US shifted focus toward a broader regional agenda centered on normalization. USA instead emphasized expanding the Abraham Accords framework and encouraging Arab and Muslim-majority states to deepen engagement with Israel. In doing so, it framed normalization not as an exception or controversy, but as an emerging regional direction. This approach was diplomatically significant. It avoided isolating Somaliland’s external engagement or portraying it as destabilizing, and instead placed it within a wider trend of pragmatic diplomatic realignment in the region. For Somaliland, the implication was indirect but important: U.S. messaging reduced the emphasis on punitive responses and reinforced a broader expectation that regional actors should move toward normalization and constructive engagement with Israel rather than resistance to it. 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 Taken together, these two occasions suggest a pattern in U.S. diplomacy: official adherence to existing international protocol regarding Somalia, combined with practical positions that create increasing political and diplomatic space for Somaliland. The United States has not formally recognized Somaliland. However, its defense of diplomatic engagement principles and its broader normalization strategy have increasingly aligned with positions that benefit Somaliland’s international standing. In diplomacy, major transitions rarely begin with immediate recognition. They often begin with defended legal principles, tolerated international engagement, and gradual strategic positioning. Many observers believe current U.S. actions toward Somaliland reflect precisely such a process.

Buurhakaba Falls Back Under Laftagareen’s Control After 67 Days Buurhakaba has reportedly fallen back under the control of Abdiaziz Laftagareen. - On 10 August 2026, Ethiopian troops withdrew from the strategic town after years of maintaining control over this important corridor connecting South West State and the Banadir region. - By 15 October 2026, Laftagareen had reportedly retaken the town, raising questions about the Somalian National Army’s ability to maintain control of the area without sustained external support. The SNA’s hold lasted just 67 days barely two months a development that critics may point to as a test of its effectiveness on its own. some old dudes seem to have returned undercover, wearing a different uniform but carrying the same familiar faces the locals know all too well😂🤣🤣
