Our back to back paper @NatureNeuro is out today (rdcu.be/fzGg0). We developed a method to visualize ribosomes bound to endogenous mRNAs with near codon resolution and made some really counterintuitive cell biological discoveries which have cool implications for AD🧵

I want to thank @CharlotteRWayne (Charlotte Wayne) and @occludens (Ugur Akcan) for their amazing work to complete this paper that took 3 years in revision. Thanks to many collaborators too.

We here show that Group A Strep infections trigger profound changes in the transcriptome of microglia and BECs. Distinct Th17-derived cytokines have shared and unique effects on these cells. Microglia activate many cytokines that are also found elevated in patients with PANDAS.

Finally, it is official! Our paper describing how microglia and brain endothelial cells respond to repeated Group A Strep infections and the implications for Sydenham’s chorea and PANDAS is out in Nature Communications. nature.com/articles/s41467-0…

Thanks to the amazing work of Ugur Akcan @occludens we discovered that the autoantibodies targeting the BBB in schizophrenia patients, break down the BBB.

The study suggests that schizophrenia has an immune component supporting the role of an aberrant immune response as a trigger for a neuropsychiatric disorder. This has similarities to our findings with post-streptococcal encephalitis (PANDAS).

I am very excited to be part of the study entitled “High prevalence of CNS-directed autoantibodies in patients with schizophrenia” which outlines the identification of many autoantibodies, including those targeting the BBB in schizophrenia patients.

According to Columbia neurologist Dr. Joshua Willey, strokes are becoming more common in younger adults. Patent foramen ovales (PFOs) and other underlying conditions, including clotting disorders and some autoimmune diseases, can increase a younger person’s stroke risk. columbiamed.link/3XjMSZG
