Chicago is facing three crises: a financial crisis, a public safety crisis, and a crisis of confidence in City Hall.  Instead of solutions, the current administration has given us a Head Tax that kills jobs, $480 million in new debt, and a Personal Property Lease Tax -  making everyday life more expensive for Chicagoans. Every one of those decisions makes it harder for Chicago to grow its way out of this crisis. Chicago needs a plan built by someone who has actually managed a fiscal crisis before. Last week, I presented my Growth Plan for a brighter Chicago under a Mayor Mendoza administration. Stay tuned for Part 2, where I lay out how we get Chicago back on track. Major companies that left Illinois under JB Pritzker: • Boeing → Virginia (2022) — closer to the Pentagon • Caterpillar → Texas (2022) — ~230 HQ jobs. Lower taxes • Citadel → Florida (2022) — Griffin cited crime (employees mugged & stabbed) + taxes. From ~1,100 jobs down to ~200 • Tyson Foods → Arkansas (2022) • TTX → North Carolina (2023) • Morton Salt → Kansas (2024) — founded in Chicago in 1848 • PEAK6 → Texas (2025) Why they left: High taxes (Illinois 9.5% corporate rate, one of the highest), crime in Chicago, pension costs, and a bad business climate. Texas and Florida have no traditional corporate income tax. Boeing also wanted to be near regulators. Caterpillar had warned Illinois years earlier about competitiveness. What they took: High-paying jobs and tax revenue. Citadel alone is estimated to have cost Illinois $100–250 million a year in taxes. Caterpillar moved corporate roles. Tyson closed its Chicago offices. Overall, Illinois lost 218 businesses to other states in 2023 alone — triple the pre-pandemic rate. How it hurts Illinois: Those jobs and HQs paid income and corporate taxes that fund schools, roads, and services. When they leave, the tax base shrinks and the burden falls harder on the people and businesses that stay. Finance jobs stayed soft after Citadel left. Real companies, real reasons, real money and jobs gone. Illinois lost real money when these companies left, and the biggest documented hit came from Citadel. After Ken Griffin moved the firm to Miami, estimates put the recurring annual loss in state and local tax revenue at $100–250 million from the employees and company combined. Griffin himself had been paying more than $200 million a year in Illinois state income taxes at his peak, and that revenue disappeared with him. High-paying headquarters and finance jobs generate outsized income, sales, and related taxes, so the departures of Citadel, Caterpillar’s corporate roles, Tyson’s Chicago offices, and the others reduced the tax base that funds schools, infrastructure, and services. Exact statewide totals across every company are hard to pin down because most firms do not publicly report their full Illinois tax payments, but the pattern is clear: when these operations left, the money and the high-wage jobs went with them, leaving a smaller tax base and more pressure on the residents and businesses that stayed. Would you vote for a governor who watched major companies pack up their headquarters, take high-paying jobs and hundreds of millions in tax revenue with them, and still claims Illinois is open for business? JB Pritzker really sat there and let Boeing, Caterpillar, Citadel, and the rest pack up and leave with the jobs and tax money, then still tries to act like Illinois is open for business. Make it make sense.

She was 20 years old and already held commercial, multi-engine, instrument, and flight instructor qualifications. Whether she had enough experience on that particular aircraft is a fair question. But there's zero evidence her age had anything to do with the crash. Nine people died. Her family just lost a daughter. Pretty tasteless headline.

To my fellow Democrats and Americans, this is why I want JB Pritzker gone. He hit us with 63 tax and fee hikes since 2019. That’s about $86 billion extra taken from families and businesses. Doubled the gas tax from 19 cents to 38 cents and locked it to inflation forever so it just keeps going up. Seven of his eight budgets broke spending records, top one hit $55.9 billion. Illinois got the highest tax burden in America now, 53% higher than the national average. Highest combined state and local taxes and highest cell phone taxes too. Truth in Accounting gave us an F on finances, worst unfunded pensions in the country. A Chicago taxpayer is sitting on about $79,500 in combined state and city debt. He signed a pension sweetener for Chicago cops and firefighters that adds like $11 billion more by 2055. Chicago’s pensions got over $50 billion in promises and only $14 billion in assets. We still got the lowest credit rating of any state. He barely vetoes anything, under 1%, just 29 vetoes on almost 3,500 bills. Signed every single bill in the 2026 session, 395 of them. Promised to veto those partisan gerrymandered maps then signed them anyway. While he’s been in office 11 former state lawmakers pleaded guilty or got convicted, including Madigan on racketeering. No real ethics reform. About 275,000 people left Illinois in his first term and took $35 billion in income with them. We’re on pace to lose a congressional seat after 2030. Private sector job growth basically nothing at 0.1%. Ranked 43rd in the country. During COVID he dropped 119 executive orders. Extended the emergency 42 times and ruled by decree for 1,155 days, longer than 49 other states. Schools ranked 43rd for actual in-person learning. Auditor General found $5.24 billion in improper unemployment payments, $2.8 billion of that just gone to identity theft and never coming back. Chicago Tribune linked him to Bahamas trusts that may have ducked millions in taxes while he was raising taxes on the rest of us. Cook County Inspector General said his family pulled toilets out of their Gold Coast mansion to get a $331,000 property tax break. His name came up on Blagojevich’s wiretaps too. He’ll say 8 balanced budgets, 12 credit upgrades, bills backlog cleared, $2 billion rainy day fund. Those “balanced” budgets needed $86 billion in new taxes. The backlog got cleared with federal COVID money. That rainy day fund is nothing next to $90 billion in debt and the worst pension mess in America. Elections coming. Read the receipts then go vote. We trying to fire JB Pritzker, man. This guy gotta go. That’s all we asking.

Stacy Davis Gates just got a raise from $180K to $250K as IFT president. Add the $195K she already takes from the CTU and she’s at $445K. She lectures everyone else about equity and “the struggle,” then gives herself a nearly 40% raise. The struggle is real. Just not for her. H/T @MaryAnnAhernNBC

Mayor Brandon Johnson’s con game continues into its fourth budget.   If Mayor Johnson’s budget is approved, it means his tax and fee increases in office amount to $1.3 billion while his school board has raised property taxes another $857 million.   The burden imposed by Johnson’s tax and fee increases are not on rich corporations, billionaires and millionaires as he claims. It falls on city residents, regardless of income, and on city businesses of all sizes regardless of their income or profits.    Even his so-called progressive spending agenda side is a shell game.    Despite all his big promises, the Mayor has only reopened 3 mental health centers, built only 500 affordable housing units, has barely returned the summer jobs program to pre-COVID levels and his vaunted mental health initiatives has seen a 70% drop in the number of responses. The Mayor’s big con game continues!

Must be election year! After delaying his promised replacement of ShotSpotter that was conveniently ended right after the 2024 Democratic Convention, Mayor Johnson’s is going to test a new gun shot detection system in six neighborhoods previously served by ShotSpotter. Too late for at least 94 gunshot victims who had no 911 calls made or delayed calls that hindered a timely emergency response. At least 57 or 60% of died. This is three times the fatality rate of other gunshot victims across the city time. The Mayor and supporters called ShotSpotter racist despite the fact that over 80% of the over 100 lives ShotSpotter is estimated to have saved and the 57 lives lost when the Mayor discontinued ShotSpotter were 80% Black. Mayor Johnson’s elimination of ShotSpotter cost Black lives!
