Per Fangraphs, Dick Allen is the 50th-most valuable offensive player in MLB history. Before today, he was the most valuable offensive non-HOFer with zero steroid allegations Now, at long last, Dick Allen is in the National Baseball Hall of Fame

Shohei Ohtani was worth 13.5 era-adjusted bWAR in 2022
Version 3.2 of our Era-Adjusted Baseball Stats is now live! eckeraadjustment.web.illinoi… Some of the best baseball in history is being played right now. Take a look! Version notes: - Stats are now up-to-date through 2026. - Talent pool version 3.0 remains the latest version. - The fullhouse R package will be updated to include the new stats. - Digressions document version 3.1 is still the latest, but its stats are outdated. I may update it eventually, but don't hold your breath. @PaulHembo @BaseballWRLD_ @JessicaDBrand @AlexDevMLB @GoBirdinals

2026 is the second season in 135 years were 7+ of the top-11 players in WAR are pitchers or two-way players (per FanGraphs)
Removing Ohtani, we have 6 pitchers in the top 11 in fWAR I can't remember the last time we had more pitchers than nonpitchers in the top 11 Indeed, I will just say, without any research at all: that has never happened!

Primary position by the top-30 hitters in fWAR C: 2 1B: 3 2B: 6 3B: 5 SS: 4 LF: 2 CF: 3 RF: 3 UT: 2 The last full season with more than 3 full-time centerfielders in the top 30 was 2015
War overrates center field defense so much that only one of them has even cracked 4.5

The only World Series champions in the last decade without a 110 wRC+ was the 2019 Nationals They had a 104 wRC+, led MLB in starting pitcher WAR, and were top-5 in both position player WAR and pitcher WAR
Replying to @AlexDevMLB
Who is the one without a 110? And what was the #?

8 of the last 9 World Series champions had a team wRC+ over 110 The only team in 2026 with a 110 wRC+ of higher is the Chicago Cubs
Replying to @pamsson
I do not believe a sub-100 wRC+ team has won a World Series in the last decade

Pete Crow-Armstrong’s MLB ranks: 2nd in Batting Value 1st in Defense Value 5th in Baserunning Value This is the most well-rounded season by a position player in 116 years
In 1991, Cal Ripken Jr was 2nd in OFF (way behind Frank Thomas), 1st in DEF 1948: Lou Boudreau 3rd/1st 1954: Willie Mays 3rd/2nd 1984: Ripken again 5th/1st 1951: Jackie 4th/2nd 1959: Ernie Banks 6th/1st 1974: Schmidt 2nd/5th 2004: Beltre 8th/1st 1990: Bonds/Dykstra 2-7/7-2

Sonny Gray will get Cy Young votes in his 1st year with BOS. He will have received Cy Young votes with four unique franchises (OAK/CIN/MIN) Gray will become the 6th player with CY votes on four franchises, joining Roger Clemens Kevin Brown Bartolo Colon David Cone* Cliff Lee*
Cy Young Predictor Will only 5 AL pitchers place on ALL 30 ballots? Seems insane to think so. Using ERA, ERA+FIP, Cy Classic, or Cy FIP-Augmented, its the same five names FIP-only gives some hope to knock out Sonny Gray on a ballot or two maybe. Maybe a reliever will get some

Cone and Lee have asterisks because their “fourth franchise” saw them get CY votes after a mid-season trade, being 1995 TOR and 2010 SEA Colon’s fourth is similarly a mid-season trade, but his 2002 MON votes are fully a single franchise as it was an inter-league trade with CLE

Most IP by relievers in MLB history: 2026, 18313.3 (on pace) 2019, 18265.2 Most wins by RPs: 2021, 1083 2026, 1029 (on pace) Best W-L% by RPs: 2021, .550 2024, .543 2026, .541 Lowest AVG against by RPs: 2022, .233 1968, .234 2024, .234 2021, .235 2026, .237
That must explain why we see so many guys • winning 20 games a year • striking out 300 batters a year • throwing so many complete games And so few position player pitching appearances! Who needs a backup catcher throwing 40 mph poo-poo when the game is better than ever!

1. PHI’s stadium is 0.54 runs/9 more hitter-friendly than MIL (1.5 WAR) 2. PHI’s defense is 0.42 runs/9 worse than MIL (1.1 WAR) 3. Sanchez has thrown 20.1 more IP (0.2 WAR) 4. Sanchez has faced tougher teams. His 2026 opponents average 0.07 runs/9 more than Miz’s (0.2 WAR)
Can someone nerdier than me explain this? How does 20 more innings with a lower era+ equate to 2.3 more bWAR?

It’s worth noting that Baseball Reference WAR is based on RA9 rather than ERA. Sanchez has allowed 6 unearned runs to Misiorowski’s 8, making their RA9 difference of 0.38 (2.82 vs 2.44) smaller than their ERA difference of 0.55 (2.52 vs 1.97) Miz gets 0.8 WAR from his RA9 lead

JJ Wetherholt has a 104 wRC+. If he were to win ROTY, it would be the lowest wRC+ by a ROTY hitter since 2004 Crosby (23rd-lowest ever) Sal Stewart has a 122 wRC+. If he were to win ROTY, it would be the lowest wRC+ by a ROTY first baseman since 1992 Karros (4th-lowest ever)
Any lately? It’s ok for us to say JJ had a great season but give credit and props to the opponent. Sal should take it at this point.

There are three spans of 4+ years where the WAR leader won MVP each year: AL 2021-25 (Ohtani/Judge/Ohtani/Judge/Judge) NL 2012-16 (Posey/McCutchen/Kershaw/Harper/Bryant) NL 2001-04 (Bonds/Bonds/Bonds/Bonds) NL 2023-26 could join that company
I often here the trope "The MVP isn't the WAR award" but in reality, over the last decade, that's exactly what it's become. Voters have gotten extremely good at picking the MVP and it often aligns with WAR. Here's the numbers since 2016:
