Bundeswehr personnel figures released for September. Despite an official narrative (by Pistorius) of the service in October including "more than 190,000" troops September figure is 186,200, a minor reduction from August (186,356). Via @AugenGeradeaus: augengeradeaus.net/2026/10/p…

Obviously it will be interesting to see how Bundeswehr is accounting for the required dramatic jump in October. As the linked account notes, BMVg for September is already engaging in some questionable revision of statistics, providing rounded figures incl several discrepancies.

"Co-leading" a mission that will only commence "in a permissive environment" (UK official statement in May). All of this remains smoke and mirrors, no one will stick their neck out as long as SoH remains an unpredictable environment. ukdefencejournal.org.uk/brit…

Once the environment is "permissive" of course the entire rationale for some sort of escort mission becomes dubious. The issue demonstrates a European lack of appetite for political & military risk. Given how the crisis unfolded, one can't really blame them, either.

After seeing Norway's Defence Industries expressing all their concern about whether the UK will actually order the things it promised to in return for Type 26, let's take a look at what UK's defence industry representatives told the Defence Committee 4 days ago. It's ugly. Kevin Craven, CEO of ADS, notes that equipment spending cratered rather than going up: "In terms of orders, what is probably interesting to note is that the equipment spend to the year ending March 2026 was £5 billion less than in the previous year". The DiP was "reasonably granular around the first four years of what, in old money, was the defence equipment plan, but thereafter less so. Even in those first four years, it was not clear whether around a third of the £298 billion announced is unfunded or not articulated in the right way." Julian David, CEO of TechUK, goes on to note "Last time we were here, we reported on our survey of members, and 73% said that the market has declined since the report; that was in May. Funding delays and reductions have hit 87% of respondents, and 93% of them are now reassessing investment or recruitment of people to focus in this sector." Stephen Philipson, CEO of MakeUK, with one of my favorite quotes: "The point that we get from many companies is that you cannot invest on press releases. We need detail and funding, and we need to make that work." Another huge quote from him is also: "(the DiP) It is nothing like an equipment plan. This is not investable as it stands at the moment. It gives you a thematic direction of travel in many areas, a lot of which is welcome and is great news, and attracts a lot of new companies into the market, but the questions are then around where the contracts, the programme and the procurement are. We do not have that yet, and that is the problem." It's as devastating as it could possibly be, behind the niceties and the ongoing attempt to say the DiP is "welcome". committees.parliament.uk/ora…

New image of recently launched new PLAN auxiliary in the upper reaches of the Pearl River in Guangzhou. I suspect this is near the Huangpu yard on Changzhou. This image should put any speculation about the original footage being AI generated to rest. Via "ACuriousPLAFan"/SDF.

The US retired LSTs after WW2, because there was no operational use for those designs outside particular requirements of the Pacific & European conflicts it participated in. USN after the war did engage in a significant build program of amphibious capacity for power projection.
Palmer Luckey warns China won’t stop at Taiwan… and believes Beijing is already building a historical narrative to justify territorial claims over Okinawa, the Philippines, and other Pacific territories. 🇺🇸🇨🇳🇹🇼🇯🇵 “This is my crazy theory, and people can disagree with me. But nobody in history has ever built a gigantic amphibious landing force, used it once, and then dismantled it—except for the United States. If China takes Taiwan, I think they’re immediately going to hop over to Okinawa, parts of the Philippines, and maybe parts of Vietnam as well. Xi Jinping has been talking about the Ryukyu Islands, where Okinawa is located, and historical tributary relationships with China. They’re not bringing up ancient history just because they love wandering through national archives looking at obscure tributary states. They’re constructing a national narrative that would allow them to convince their people to start with Taiwan—and then go after more of America’s Pacific allies.”

Mothballing & scrapping surplus capacity after the largest conflict in human history is hardly the strategic comparison appropriate in this regard. Spreading pub talk as geopolitical wisdom remains one of the irritating hazards of people like Luckey rising to prominence.

That doesn't mean China has no further geopolitical ambitions beyond Taiwan, just to be clear. But you can see related talking points based on more insightful analysis by dozens, probably hundreds of relevant accounts, that dont rely on vibes to come to such conclusions.

Article focuses on German Army desire to operate "deep strike" missiles up to 1,500 km, incl low cost missiles and Tomahawk. However, it also notes that the German Navy still intends to operate Tomahawk, presumably via future F127 frigates. hartpunkt.de/deep-precision-…

Quite intrigued by this. For one to see how big it's going to be (given previous MN comments that they may not necessarily prefer a cruiser sized hull). And of course integration of next generation Sylver launchers for more payload flexibility.
