After years of war, life is trickling back to Palmyra, the modern town beside the fabled ruins.
My latest piece, for @ForeignPolicy.

NEW: Lamis was 8. Her brothers, Osama and Yaseen, were 9 and 11. They were killed alongside their uncle and grandmother when Jordanian jets struck their village in southern Syria, in what Amman called a "precision" attack. @CP__Ward for @newlinesmag newlinesmag.com/spotlight/in…

Spoke with @JustinSalhani about Israel’s “Yellow Line”. It is treated as a de facto new border: troops hold the land south of it and keep detonating homes there. It is as if the ceasefire applies to the rest of Lebanon but not to this territory. aljazeera.com/news/2026/10/1…

To be clear: Some facts are neither in dispute nor unclear. Our photographer was clearly marked as Press. She was clearly beaten. These are not partisan or risible statements, but indisputable. We urge a thorough investigation and accountability.
The Prime Minister’s Office:
The facts surrounding the confrontation near Abu Falah, during which Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine was allegedly assaulted, remain unclear and are under investigation.
Israel unequivocally condemns violence against anyone—Jews, Arabs, Christians or journalists. Those responsible will be held accountable.
But serious questions remain. Reports indicate some 200 Arabs and far-left activists confronted approximately 40 Israeli youths. Footage shows masked individuals on both sides hurling objects, amid reports of fireworks fired at Jewish youths. Other footage appears to show Levine knocked down and immediately helped to her feet by the same unidentified individual.
The investigation must establish the facts, including who initiated the violence.
We will not allow disputed incidents to be exploited to demonize the hundreds of thousands of law-abiding Jewish residents of Judea and Samaria.
The facts must determine the conclusions. Not the headlines.

NEW: Israel has effectively imposed a media blackout on occupied south Lebanon. We were among the last reporting teams to go before Israel blocked journalists from entry in late September.
UNIFIL confirmed that “at the moment” it can no longer take journalists into the zone.

#Syria’s former prisoners are battling a silent mental health crisis.
Around 9 of every 10 are suffering from psychological disorders after years of torture and isolation.
I went to a clinic in #Homs to speak to a few on the road to recovery.
Full story below. 👇

Nabatieh al-Fawqa, before and after Israeli attacks (picture is from September).
Nabatieh al-Fawqa is not part of Israel’s self-proclaimed security zone.
The Israeli army has razed dozens of towns across southern Lebanon, intensifying demolitions during the ceasefire and extending the destruction beyond the areas it occupies.
Because many of these areas are inaccessible, residents have had to pay for satellite imagery online just to find out whether their homes are still standing.

Reconstruction in Syria is neither linear nor a quick fix. But young people are organizing themselves and their communities with a vision toward the future.
My latest for @theprogressive :
In a post-civil war Syria, rebuilding trust across sectarian divides has been fraught. These young people aim to find common ground in their city.
