Dear Secretary Bessent @SecScottBessent,
My name is Everett Stern. In 2010 I was a compliance officer at @HSBC. From a back office in New Castle, Delaware, I watched billions of dollars move to drug cartels, sanctioned regimes, and terrorist organizations. The enemies of the United States. I documented it, I escalated it, and when the bank would not act, I took it to the @FBI, the @CIA, and eventually the @SECGov.
The result was a $1.92 billion settlement. At the time, it was one of the largest in American history. It was also about five weeks of the bank’s profit. Not one banker was charged. Not one went to prison.
I paid a different price. I lost my career, my savings, and my place in the industry I had trained for. I was blacklisted. Every door in American finance closed at once. I slept on a camping cot in a 300 square foot apartment because I could not afford a bed, and I waited tables at @PFChangs to eat. I tell you this not for sympathy, but so you understand that I know exactly what it costs to do the right thing in American finance, and exactly how little the system does in return.
I made that sacrifice because I believed it would change something.
Yesterday, your department fined @BankofAmerica $1.2 billion for failing to report more than $5 billion in suspicious transactions, some of it tied by your own findings to Chinese laundering networks, narcotics, and the southwest border, alongside 475 apparent sanctions violations touching Russia, Iran, and global terrorism. The bank admitted it willfully violated the Bank Secrecy Act.
Fourteen years after HSBC. A bank with “America” in its name. And once again, not one individual charged.
Secretary Bessent, I want to say plainly what I believe you already know. The fines are not working.
A fine is paid by shareholders, absorbed by the balance sheet, and forgotten by the next earnings call. Bank of America reported earnings this morning. Nobody who set the alert thresholds, nobody who decided the 2024 cease and desist could wait, nobody who chose the backlog over the law will lose a single thing they value. Their lives are untouched. That is the entire reason the behavior repeats.
This is money laundering. This is blood money. Money that reaches a cartel buys fentanyl that kills Americans. Money that reaches a terrorist organization buys the next attack. This country has fought a war on drugs and a war on terror for decades, at enormous cost in lives and treasure, and all the while we have allowed the financing to flow through institutions we charter and regulate. Cut off the money and we win. We have never seriously tried.
There is also a question of equal justice that I cannot let go.
Before I walked into the FBI building to report HSBC, I stopped in front of the Great Seal on the wall and read the words engraved beneath it: “Justice is the defense of our liberty.” I believed that. I still want to. But every day in this country, people go to prison for crimes that are nothing next to moving money for the people who want Americans dead. A suit, a title, and a corporate badge should not be a shield from the consequences that apply to everyone else. If a street dealer goes to prison for what he sells, the banker who moved the cartel’s money should be standing next to him.
I also want to raise something that is rarely said in these conversations. Why has no one inside Bank of America come forward the way I did? The answer is that everyone in American banking knows what happened to me, and to the whistleblowers who came after. The last person who spoke up is the only policy anyone believes. That is a culture problem, and it starts with leadership, in the banks and in the agencies that regulate them.
This is not a political issue. It has spanned administrations of both parties. It is a national security issue, and I am asking you to treat it as one.
Three things would change the math overnight.
Refer individuals for criminal prosecution. Not the analyst in the queue. The executives who set the thresholds and chose the risk. One banker in handcuffs would do more than every fine in Treasury’s history combined.
End “too big to jail.” An institution cannot be too big to fail and too big to jail at the same time. If it is the first, it must be held to a higher standard, not a lower one.
And if Bank of America will not act as America’s bank, review its charter. A national charter is a privilege granted on behalf of the American people. It should be conditioned on not moving money for the people trying to kill them.
Secretary Bessent, you said yesterday that these actions send a clear message that even the biggest institutions are not above the law. With respect, the institution was never the problem. The people inside it are above the law, and they know it. Until that changes, I will keep writing letters like this one, and the next bank will keep paying the next fine.
I gave up everything I had to stop this. I am asking you to use the power you have to finish it.
Respectfully,
Everett A. Stern

I don't know what you are going through. Some of you are struggling with challenges I could never imagine. But you know who does know what you are going through? God. He is real, and he loves you.
I met @RjMitte 3 weeks ago and had a wonderful time with him. We hung out together for a few hours and he told me about his family, his work, his philanthropy, his investments, and his dreams.
Breaking Bad was my favorite TV show, so getting to hang out with him in person was surreal. He was just a totally normal dude and we had a lot in common. He told me that he had 36 students on scholarship. Thats 36 kids that got the opportunity to get an education because of him.
I had the privilege to tell him about my app and we talked about it for a while. In the moment, this was the most important thing to me - telling my new celebrity friend about my Bitcoin app. But, today, I can't help but wish I would have just told him about Jesus instead.
We interacted a bit on X over the past 3 weeks, and I was looking forward to continuing to get to know him and following his career. But today, he abruptly took his own life.
I say this to hopefully help you learn from my mistake. I encourage you remember what is important. It's not us. It's Jesus.
If you don't know him, you can. If you do, tell someone who doesn't.
Rest in peace, RJ.

the spooks want your Bitcoin

Totally agree with this take. Forever tinkering with something that already works unless absolutely necessary is the slow rug to failure.
No ones job should rely upon them continually making updates.
In the US we pass thousands of counter productive laws every single year because we have career bureaucrats whos providence relies upon them inventing reasons to keep getting paid.
The incentives are broken are will absolutely fail over time.

Spiritual warfare with me as target - let me explain.
As an atheist I could “feel” the evil energy and verbalized it while still an atheist. I could feel “something” was trying to kill me. I said that after the second of four freak near death encounters in Los Angeles that all had one weird common denominator tying them together. And timing of all four further had another clear common denominator tying them together beyond coincidence.
Then I saw what I was convinced was base level demonic “evil” looking at me through a person. An evil unlike what you could expect from a person. This was followed up by two freak supernatural incidents that could not be explained.
And I knew telling anyone this would be unbelievable for most people. And I wish everyone would have these super natural experiences because otherwise it’s not believable. I wouldn’t believe what I am telling you if I was you 😉
I just want to say that many of the famous high level historic scientists were Christians and they said that initially in science it kind of takes you away from God, but when you get all the way to the bottom of the scientific rabbit hole then you find God and you can’t deny him. Some of them:
- Sir Isaac Newton
- Nicolaus Copernicus
- Galileo Galilei
- Johannes Kepler
- Blaise Pascal
- Lord Kelvin
All believers in scientific method and proof. That being said it definitely is a matter of faith. No one can hand anyone a “proof in hand” of God’s existence. It’s all a matter of smoking guns and “there has to be a God, to explain “this””.
Jesus is a better documented historical person than ANY other famous person pre 1000 AD. This includes non-Christian historians.
There is no way 12 people (his disciples) all chose to be killed instead of denying his miracles and in particular resurrection, which is beyond human ability. Each of them could avoid torture and death by saying “ok I was just kidding, we made it up”. No, 12 out of 12 chose torture and death over an easy walkaway. No one dies for a lie and definitely not 12 out of 12.
Further Jesus fulfilled more than 300 prophecies that were centuries old. But you only see this if you read The Old Testament. AI can probably also give you the verses.
Seek and you shall find as Jesus said.
I was 1000% where you are until a few years ago.
Thank you for your honest and critical thinking questions. That’s the truth seeking mentality that leads to God.
Bless you 🙏🏻

I fully understand when you as non-believer is tired of Christians like me and others keep telling you about Jesus and God. I was atheist most of my life - I have full sympathy for you.
Just know that when we do, we do it because we love you and want your eternal salvation. So we talk about Jesus knowing it will cost “followers” and push some away, but know it comes from a Christian because he loves you.
The easiest solution as Christian is to avoid the topic and pushback, but we do it because we love you! ❤️✝️🙏🏻

Spare cash and a mortgage? Every extra dollar on the loan earns its rate, guaranteed. Bitcoin has to beat that.

When the Antichrist comes onto the scene, and he will, you're going to love him. I'm going to love him. Because he's a fake Christ, and sometimes fake is the next best thing. He's the pretend 'anointed one' who will ostensibly "fix" this mess Western Civilization is in.
I can't wait to be honest. Kick some ass, take some names, take us back to Americana baby! Law & order, clean streets, American girls, strong men, morals, kids playing and based livin'... Heaven on Earth!
But that's my flesh talking, not my spirit, it's the part of me that's connected to the Earth, and earthly things.
No, he's a headfake, and almost everyone will fall for it, even, if it were were possible, Jesus' elect.
Is it wrong for me to want these good things mentioned above? No, not at all. What's wrong is expecting them from any source other than the Father via his Son Jesus.
And ironically - it's exactly what the REAL CHRIST, Jesus the Christ, is going to do for us, when he comes out of exile, defeats the usurper, the lowercase king, and establishes himself as the hard-power over the earth for 1000 years.
So don't let your decaying cellular structure dictate your future. Don't give up what you cannot keep for that which you cannot lose.
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding, acknowledge Him in everything you do and he will make your path straight.

Vast majority of Americans are starting their week and have no idea that the US 10 yr is 5.223%, published US debt is $40T but actually $204T when you take into account unfunded medicare and social security obligations, publicly held debt, and pension liabilities. Bessent has to refinance almost $10T of maturing debt this year and that's in addition to the status quo $2T deficit borrowing they normally have to sell on the open market.
Nothing stops the train that is massive money printing and most people still believe that their politician (left or right) can save the day (they mathematically cannot).
Since 1971 the S&P 500 has only returned 2% on average when measured in gold and taking into account dividends even though most Americans believe its the nominal 10% return per year when measured in dollars.

Why #privacy coins (and all other shitcoins) wil fail...
Competing money needs all MINIMUM properties to be ELIGIBLE.
Once the minimum is reached improving a feature beyond the minimum necessary quality does not help it compete better.
Once it is eligible to compete then the lead in NETWORK EFFECT is what matters most. That's just how money evolves.
Even if all minimum properties of money exist for a token, it must not have any disqualifying features, as that would mean it's destined to fail, or be enforced as fiat - the very thing the new world money will replace (or die trying).
Any other cryptocurrencies eligible to compete as digital world sound money are too far behind in network effects to catch up to Bitcoin. Any feature, eg extra privacy, cannot help it make up ground.
The leader, Bitcoin, must fail for any other cryptocurrency to have a chance, but if it does fail, digital scarcity will be lost forever, and none can succeed, no matter how good their features are.
Why?
Because with bitcoin gone, there are many cryptocurrencies with the minimum technical requirements all competing with similar-enough strength in network effect, such that none would ever jump ahead by leaps and bounds like Bitcoin did, with years of no competition.
That's the essence of why we only have one shot at digital scarcity.
Don't fuck it up. It's Bitcoin or death.
To help understand why the lead in network effect matters most for the race to become money, please see my essay on why money trends towards one...
