What I & many others want to understand is why that insult was directed at other black Americans in the first place, why is it specifically called 'AFRICAN' booty scratcher when Africans weren't present in large enough numbers to serve as a meaningful reference point? It appears as if the black Americans who shared the most phenotypical resemblance to continental Africans (dark skin, 4C hair, full lips, etc) were already being denigrated long before African immigrants came on the scene.
